Folks, a friend of mine has a Presario 5152, K6-2/350, 8GB HDD, basic CD-ROM and FDD. His rig is acting like the MoBo is dead or dying. System powers up but no video. I've bypassed the onboard video using two known good video cards, one a PCI and the other (believe it or not) an ISA and nothing. You can hear the HDD spinning up, all fans fire up but nothing else. I haven't finished trouble-shooting but right now my money's on the MoBo. Here's the bad part - the MoBo, a Compaq proprietary design, is still available as a replacement part for $401.00! The power supply looks outwardly like an AT design but has three MoBo connectors and is no longer available from Compaq and an off the shelf P/S won't work. Now here's my question. If we take his HDD out of this rig and put it in a non-Compaq rig will it boot? Or will there be a problem with recognizing a non-Compaq BIOS? TIA!:)

In that line, those drives are basically off the shelf. As long as the new motherboards bios sees the drive settings in the same way, it would boot. If the drive was fdisked, and formatted with slightly different bios settings, it wouldn't boot properly, but you could read the data.
