Hello guys,

I saw an i5 4690K CPU for $40 at Goodwill today. The CPU and heatsink look brand new. The employee said I have 7 days to return for a refund if it doesn't work.

Do I need to do anything first before swapping the i3-4360 CPU with an i5-4690k CPU? Will Windows 8 boot up normally and detects the new CPU? No need reinstall Windows after swapping CPu? Is it okay to overclock the new CPU using a stock fan?

My mid range pc rig:
i3 4360, asrock 97pro4 mobo, Sapphire 7870 GPU, 8gb ddr3, 120gb ssd, windows 8.1

Thanks for the help

Should work straight away, but then again ... windows :p
O/C capabilities will depend on temps (ambient/room included) but at least a little bit should be possible.

(Damn...$40?? )

I would update the bios to the latest and set defaults before upgrading a cpu or memory. I would hate to change something out only to find via beep codes that a bios revision did not support what I had just installed.

I wouldn't flash the BIOS unless I needed to.

Check the CPU list for your mobo first. If your BIOS supports the 4690K, it should be a straight swap.

You need BIOS P1.30 in order to upgrade to that chip. Many users find that chips requiring a newer BIOS still work with the older ones, but may not notice some features. Since you have a chip in there now, you might as well make sure ahead of time.

No OS re-install will be required. After you confirm the BIOS and install, you should be good to go. Windows might want a reboot after the install, but that should be the most you can expect from the process.

Thanks guys. I ended up purchasing the i5 for $40. Just updated the bios to the latest version using instantflash. Can't wait to swap it later tonight and hopefully it works and not defective. I will let you know if I encounter any problems. Again thanks.

$40. Deal of the week! (assuming it is working)
