I bought one of those Toshiba laptops at BestBuys Memorial day sale that had a desktop celeron 2.8, I like to take things apart so I was messing around and found the heat pipe cooler and processor socket and decided to try swapping the 2.8ghz celeron out for a 2.2ghz P4 (512k L2) I am using it right now :D

So is it safe to assume that trading 600 celeron mhz for an additional 384k L2 is a smart move? what other benefits will the P4 have over the higher clocked celeron?

Next evil thought is to violate my desktop system and see if the 3.0ghz HT chip will work in this laptops mobo

I dont really want to tear apart my main computer though, how can I find out if the 3ghz HT chip will work?

Here are some benchmarks with the 2.8ghz celeron and the 2.2ghz P4

3dmark2001se benches

Old 3dmark2001se score with the 2.8ghz celeron 1700

New 3dmark2001se score with the 2.2ghz P4 2100

Q3 benches

Old Q3 fps with 2.8ghz celeron 77 at 800x600

New Q3 fps with 2.2ghz P4 110 at 800x600

Yeah, if you're interested in gaming, it's definately a very smart move, the Celery is an absolutely abysmal CPU for gaming

Well, with the processor swap and the addition of 512mb ram (now 768mb total) this is a snappy little laptop, I think a 5400rpm hard drive would help some too, gotta keep an eye out for a hot deal :D

You will have the added bonus of perhaps 5mins longer battery life as the 2.2 uses less power. What Motherboard is it based on? if its capable of 533fsb you could remove the bsel 0 bin for some overclocking :)

??? tell me more :D

somewhere in wcpuid or cpu-z I did see that the motherboard is capable of 533mhz fsb, and the chip I installed was previously doing 3.2ghz with stock cooling and .25v increase in my desktop system.

Well youll need to find out if the motherboard supports it, and then you just break off BSEL0 pin with a retractable pencil and it recognises it as a 533chip :) my current 2.4 is running like a champ at 3.2ghz / 1.55v

Hmm, to find out, I would rather try an actual 533mhz fsb chip rather than ruin this chip if it doesnt work.

Heat is a consideration too, I noticed the fan was not running 90% of the time when the laptop was running on battery power, I searched around a while and came up with this Windows based software fan control utility, it has an option to "force fan on"

When the fan was not running the temp was around 140f, now it is at 97f with the fan forced on.

In which case goto ebay and find yourself a mobile p4 or celeron and use one of those :) in a desktop board they default to 1200mhz snap the pin and you get 1.6ghz at very little outlay ( I paid £10 for a 1.5ghz mobile celeron)
