Swaping same chipset mobos, do I need to format/reinstall WinXP?

I'm going from a Shuttle AN35N-Ultra to an Abit NF7-S v2. Do I need to reinstall WinXP or can I just swap the boards?

Thanks,
J.

if the chipset is the same then you probably wont have to. what about other hardware? you might want to consider a repair of XP when you have the new board running if the other hardware is different.

All hardware will be the same, I'm even putting them in the same PCI slots though I doubt that makes a difference.

Ok, try it by just swapping the boards. If you have a lot of problems then try a repair, but looks like you wont need to.

I uninstalled most of the hardware, shutdown, swapped, boot back up, and for the most part everything was fine. Took a few mins to reinstall all the drivers but now it's working great.

I did the reverse for my parents computer. NF7-S 2.0 to AN35N Shuttle (supposedly one of the most stable boards.) I did have to wait a bit for the USB data to resync, and I did get a message saying that Windows had recovered from a serious error with an OK box. Benchmarks & torture tests fine.

That computer's hard drive is NOW in a Shuttle XPC (FN45G) same chipset. Everything's again fine. But Norton's beginning to suspect me of piracy due to several quick configuration changes .

In most cases, no. But if the new system will not boot all the way, or crashes on boot, you can do an inplace upgrade that will rewrite the HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer), allowing the OS to work with the new hardware.

As others said, you should be ok with swapping. I've done it with nForce to nForce2 boards. No problems, until I screwed it up, but that was my fault...

You probably want to backup your data first, just to be on the safe side.

I remember with win2k, you weren't allowed to switch mobos with different chipsets.. But a guy at my computer shop found how to replace a mobo with diff onboard chip:
You have to go into hardware settings and change the hdd controllor back to (i believe i was a) 16-bit hdd controller.

With XP, if you swap between two diff. chipsets- is it possible? If so, can you just directly swap or do you have to change the controller?
