swaping an x2 cpu.Do I need a silver paste?

I am changing a motherboard from a horrendous(worst mobo ever created by men) DFI ultraD3 to AsRock mobo. Can I just take out the CPU and put it in the AsRock mobo or will I need a sliver paste or something?

Very funny Rivers.

Seriously though Stockrider, get some AS5.
It's worth the 5 bucks.

Also... there is usually SOME paste on the bottom of the CPU already. Though it's junk.

After you remove the CPU and heatsink, you will need to clean the thermal paste off of both the CPU and the heatsink. Rubbing alcohol works great for this.

Make sure it's high purity rubbing alcohol. Should be able to find 90%+ at most grocery or drug stores.

Yep, I use cotton swap with rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover to removal residual thermal paste.
Then, add an rice grain-sized arctic silver 5 (AS5). That should do it.

yup dab a q-tip in alcohol, and rub gently. little rice kernel or bead sized amount of AS5 will work wonders. and dont worry your temps will improve even more after you use it. i have heard that it takes 200 hours on full steam to completely setlle all AS5 into every nook and cranny on the heatsink and the cpu.

The reason I asked is because 2 weeks ago while waiting in line at a computer shop,I saw a tech guy swaping the cpu without doing anything. He just looked at the heat sink..blew at the cpu and put it all together. That's it. So I thought, the silver is the thing of the past..maybe.
I guess not!

Wow. What store was that, make sure people don't send their machines there!

There is a possibility that the "tech" already had pre-applied thermal tape or grease on the heatsink, but that's a scary thought if he didn't.
