swapfile size -->spicific question

please don't flame me, i know this topic has been beaten like a redheaded stepchild but i still have a question... i have 384megs of ram so after reading all the posts i figured a fixed 256meg swapfile should be fine. to test this, i set the swapfile size and opened photoshop and increased an image to a size of 639megs, while the picture was open i did some flask encoding at the highest settings, to top it off i watched a bit of a high bitrate divx movie. during all this according norton system doctor my max swapfile usage was 75%. now, i probably answered my own question but is there anything else i can run to make sure i have set the swapfile big enough? i don't want to be in the middle of something important and get an out of memory error message...

it's kinda ridiculous too have a large swap file if u never use it all, so comon sense is what i would go with. get some program to monitor your swap file usage, and set it accordingly

Sell some of your RAM. 384 MB is ungodly. If you're using the right OS you won't even use your swap file. So it's kind of a moot point.

People (including my self), tend to set to a fix swap file because it provide slightly smoother operation (Window doe not have to change the swap file each time it starts or in the middle of operation). However when someone is using unusual application, setting the swap file according to rule of thumb, is not necessarily a good idea.

ledzepp98 if you are the computer the way you described above. Then make sure that you have a huge drive, set a huge drive, and set a huge swap file. A smaller fix file will do fine under normal situation but will hinder the operation as describe above. Seems to me that in your case is probably one of the cases that make more sense to leave the swapfile on automatic, and let Window handle it.

do not set your swap file to 2x your memory. 768 is much too large. around 300 should be MORE than enough

Swapfile is suck. Disable Virtual Memory. You've got 384 megs ram! hehe That's better than if you have 128 megs ram and 256 meg swap file.. right?

Swapfile is Suck!
