my friend has a e-machine with kt266 shipest and 2000+. I'm thinking of buying them one of those frys deal and a 512 stick for their xmas present (2800+/nforce2...) especially since frys deals are so cheap anyways.

But can I? Will i run into propeitory connections, and will the computer lock me out from using a different motherboard? Does anyone know? Thanks

I don't know for sure but I bet you will run into problems with proprietary parts...eMachines are super-cheap so I'm sure you would run into some problems.

most emachines are standard micro atx boards, now that gateway owns em it might change but in the past , and i think 2000+ qualifies, as old enough to be standard form factor.

Frys deals are ATX boards not micro atx, so thie fit would be an issue, another minor issue...power switch and LED's are usualy 1 big connector on OEM systems, it may be necessary to cut it appart with an exacto knife,

back plane will also need to be replaced, but that will come with the new motherboard.

bottom line, it can be done... but why not just grab a new case and a more powerful PS unless $26 shipped from compgeeks is too much.
