My friend and I were fishing and there were a couple of them and a chick or whatever the term is, about a hundred yards away and one of them, the male I guess was watching us closely. My friend messed up a cast and hooked his line on this big log out about 50 feet or so, so he goes out and unhooks it, and the male swan comes towards him, but turns and goes back. After that, anytime my friend says anything, the swan tenses up, but me he ignores. My friend hooks a pretty good sized catfish, and yells. The swan comes out and he's not going back this time. He attacks my friend, and somehow he knows that the groin is THE place to get maximum results. He nailed him twice before my friend could get out of the water. I was laughing at first, then realized he was doing damage. My friend is yelling and finally, after he hits the swan with his fishing pole, the swan backs off and goes back about halfway to where the Mrs and the chick are, and he was making all kinds of funny noises and seemed to be pleased with himself.
A couple of years later, my friend, his wife and 15 year old kid, and his in laws go back to the same spot. The first day, no swans and the second day, his son and father in law are fishing early, there are two swans, but they are ignoring the kid and Grandpa, and so my friend comes out and before he gets his line in the first time, there's a swan, the same swan it turns out, coming at him, and he's REALLY pissed this time! My friend bails and runs to his SUV and jumps in just in time. The swan is all over the SUV, pecking at it, and when gramps tries to scare it off, he gets scared off instead! My friend's wife called 911 (I thought that was kind of funny) and soon, just after the swan had gone back in the water, the local sherriff and a game warden show up. They tell him the pair of swans have been there for years, and yeah the swan remembers people really well and when it recognized my friend, he knew what to do, attack. Turns out swans have remembered people for over 25 years between sightings.
Last year, my friend is playing golf at a local course and was attacked by a goose. He's all freaked out now about any birds. The vultures we have around here aren't agressive towards people, but with each other, it's war. I saw two Turkey Vultures fighting like hell over a bloated Raccoon along the road. They seemed totally unafraid of traffic passing right by them. My friend lives where there are constant fights over roadkill and he's kind of scared to go out in the daytime!
