SVideo out on ti4200

so i got a ti4200 new for 35$. I previously had a mx4000 hooked up to my tv through the svideo. It would display any resolution on the tv, a 32" Sony CRT. So i put in the ti42 and hook up the svid, and i get no actual picture, just black and white lines, fuzz, whatever but no picture from the pc display. So i restart(winxpsp2 BTW) in VGA mode and have a picture. The second i try to change colors from 8bit to 16 or 32 i lose the display. If i change the resolution, I lose the display.

any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Remember, if your OUTputting from your S-video, there should be no pic on your pc monitor, only on your video1or video2, etc., on your Sony tv. Also, check your s-video cable- I once bought a $40 Monster cable but then it only displayed black and white picture. PIECE OF CRAP! Whatever you do, don't buy monster cables.
Then again, if you get crappy picture on your pc monitor, your card is crap. Return it or get a new one.

Welcome to AT.

Make sure you have the output set to the right region (you too, Lurknomore). NTSC is what you want for North America. The wrong region could result in a black and white picture.

Do you have the latest drivers installed?

Are you trying to clone the display or are you switching between displays or the like?

thx for the replies. I've tried dualview, which is basically the same as clone. It just is supposed to know that the tv is hooked up through the svid. It probably only can tell when the dvi is hooked up so i checked the box that says FORCE TV DETECTION. Its got to be something within windows, because it works until windows starts. I just can't figure out what is making it cut the signal. It works ok in vga mode and i can get full screen video on the tv, but if i start windows normally, it won't work. It's just a pain in the azz to have to restart in vga mode to watch any video on the tv.

another question, how would I go about hooking up my pc to my receiver. I've got plenty of open coax and optical ins, and the computer has 6ch onboard sound. What cables do you use to get digital sound output to the receiver. Mostly just for dvd, videos etc.. not really any gaming.

I been lurking for a while so I know that u know about alot of this htpc stuff YOYOYO. So i appreciate the help..

For sound...

Does your motherboard have digital output?

Does your receiver have 6 channel direct input?

If either of these is the case, then you'll be able to get surround sound from DVDs.

If you only have analog out and your receiver doesn't have 6 channel direct input, the best you're going to get from movies is Prologic II or whatever your receiver has as a stereo to multichannel mode.

If you need a solution to get surround sound from movies, a Chaintech AV710 will do the trick.

for sound just whack in a cheap Creative Labs 5.1 Live card, if i remember right it has a SPDIF passthrough from the DVD-ROM player internally, then u just use the output on the back, will either be optical or 3.5mm so you might need a 3.5mm to Coax adapter/cable.......they do exist cuz i do it from an Audigy...lol

or you can let the card do the decoding if its the Digital version with Dolby Digital and then use the various analogue outputs to the external channel inputs on your amp, will need three 3.5mm to twin RCA cables for LeftFront/RightFront, Centre/Sub, LeftRear/RightRear.

on the video side of things, i used to have a 4200Ti, i had a S-Video to SCART lead, not sure u will use SCART tho if your outside of the UK/European areas.....that worked fine tho...lol
make sure you not trying to force higher than 1024 resolution, i think thats the limit it can output to a TV........if i remember right it can take a few moments to get going on the TV....but to be honest its easier to use the clone mode.....

Ive tried the clone mode and the dualview. It's got the latest drivers, and the only resolution that will work is 640x480 with 8bit color. I can't figure out WTF is causing it because when I boot up I can see everything on the TV, up to the point that windows starts. Even the windows loading screen works, but then as soon as it is loaded, screen goes fuzzy, like the signal is lost or someting. I guess I'll just have to keep f'n around with it and use vga mode right now.
Thanks for the sound card info, i'm definitely gonna check that out.

Check out the HTPC area of AVSforum if you haven't already.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling your video drivers. Maybe something got messed up.
