svideo connection to tv not working

first off i'm not sure whether it is more appropriate to post this message in this forum or in the video forum. if my choice to put it here is inappropriate, please move it to the appropriate forum.

my roommate has a dell w/ a ati radeon x300 video card which has svideo out connection. he wanted to use his tv to mirror his monitor. i told him to get an svideo cable. and we noticed a few things (i have never connected a video card to tv before so i am a rookie too); first the connection on the vid card has 7 pins and the one on the tv has only 4 (from what i read in other forums this isn't a big deal). when i plugged in i was able to get the second display to work on the tv on several different resolutions (800x600, 1280x1024, etc.). the main goal of doing this however is that my roommate wanted to play dvd's on his computer and then view them on his tv. when i opened up his dvd player it played fine on the computer monitor, but when i shifted (or started) it on the tv screen the dvd area was blank. anyone have any ideas why this happened? i suggested that he try to purchase a svideo to rca cable/converter and use the rca connections on his tv.

also i didn't know how to make the secondary screen exactly the same as the desktop display (that is, not have it be an extension of the desktop, but rather mirror it exactly), or if this is even possible.

for the dvd playback problem - you need to turn off overlay/hardware acceleration. for ati, i believe there is a setting for something like "theater mode"

Pretty sure you have to make the S-Video output the "Primary" monitor in the ATI software. Right now, it's probably monitor "2". You need to make it monitor 1 to see the DVD playback.

Setting it to single display and then switching between each display has always worked best for me. If he only wants to watch movies on the tv, that should work for him unless he needs to have both on for some reason.

For the 7-pin out, don't worry about it since it's working. The extra pins for for a special adapter that would output s-video and composite video.
