hi, does anyone know what svchost.exe actually does? and how come there are 3 or 4 of it running at the same time? i am running windows xp. the following is a weird error message:

remote procedure call service terminated unexpectedly

Having several instances of svchost running is normal. As for the RPC thing, sounds like you may have the W32.Blaster.Worm. More info and a link to a removal tool here.
