svchost.exe using 90% of cpu

Svchost is open five times in my task manager, and the one listed as a local service is using all of my cpu.

What is wrong with it? I'm pretty sure it didn't use to be like this.

I also have a problem with something eating away at my memory, the longer I leave my computer on the slower everything gets (including screen savers; which slow to a crawl and skip on even beziers and star field :/)

I have run trendmicro's free online virus scan but it couldn't remove Java.Ever virus (says my computer is using the files; but it doesn't show up in task manager), I forgot exact what it was called. I have run AdAware, SpySweeper, SpyHunter, have AdMuncher/Winpatrol.

First off get yourself a real virus scanner, many online scanners (including trendmicro's) will not remove everything. Here are 3 options that wont cost you anything for the next 6-12 months:

It's absolutly essential that you run with an up-to-date virus scanner.

If after you've installed and cleaned up any viruses you have svchost is still running away come and report back to us (I couldnt find anything specific on the one you've listed, however viruses generally have a number of differant names so it's possible the online scan calls it something differant).

svchost is a windows service. I know that much, its not a virus but it shouldnt be eating up 90% of RAM. At home I have atleast 3 running at all time, right now at work I have 4.

You might want to try rebooting into safe mode (with networking) and see if the online scanner can take it out. If the files were being used, you need to get to safe mode to kill it sometimes. But I agree with spyordie007 - you need to get a real anti-virus program. Chances are good that is the source of the high CPU use.

Although SVCHost is a windows service, but at times third party services (like McAfee Firewall) can cause SVCHost to use a lot of your system resources. You will have to perform cleanboot troubleshooting to narrow down the cause & then eliminate it.

1. Try looking for and disabling non-microsoft services in msconfig.
2. Use process of elminiation method to find offending program.

Is there any way to find out which svchost.exe corresponds to which SP service? It is possible to shut down svchost.exe, but if it is from an essential service like RPC then the system may restart.

some of the nasty new virii replace svchost, i had to reinstall to get it cleaned.
