SVCHOST.EXE, or ISP, or ROUTER, or Whole Computer Problem

My ISP's service has been horrible lately, so Im unsure if this is a related or seperate problem anyways, sometimes after a long amount of internet usage my SVCHOST.EXE 'System' begins to climb in Mem Usage till it peaks around 32,000 K, followed by a connection drop, now Im forced to A - restart my computer, which is a hassle when im in the middle of something, or B - End Process, which does correct the problem, SVCHOST.EXE 'System' reverts back to a miniscule process using a very small fraction of the prior Mem usage, and I am able to surf the net, but I can't play most audio now, almost all of my mp3's state : Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there may be a problem with your sound or video device, Try installing a new device driver.

Do you hav any idea whats causing this, or how to rectify it, or just an explanation? If you need more info just ask, Thanks alot.

P.S. - I know this is likely in the wrong forum but I was unsure of which one to post this in. Thanks.

Thanks for the advice, now, I have the latest Spybot release.. the latest Ad-Aware release and the latest, McAfee AntiVirus release, I scanned my computer 4 times with Mcafee today and nothing shows up, I will try it in safe mode.. and maybe I should use a different AntiVirus.. post suggestions please.

Yes I would suggest one online like Panda Antivirus online scan. It could be possible that your McAfee is disabled. Yes Sasser and most other worms know how to disable your AV software.

I would definately suspect spyware - large memory & resource usage of SVCHOST is a giveaway.

I service computers for a living. 75% of all my service calls are spyware related. Spybot and Adaware have been off my radar for a year. Besides a simple scan with an anti-spyware app alone won't do it anymore. You also have to check for other things like malicious BHO objects and HOSTS file hijackers.

Please try my recommended spyware removal procedure here: http://theflyingpenguin.com/spyware-removal.shtml

Afterrwards run a FULL virus scan in SAFE MODE.

Hope this helps...

Hey thanks all, and Flying, I did the entire cleaning process you had on the site, and it did clean out a few things, minor things, but the main issue with my SVCHOST.exe remains.. could it just be my ISP being really crappy recently (to most of the Bell Sympatico users in my area), causing it?

You could always bring your drive to a friend's place and have him scan it externally. That usually picks up a few things. If that doesn't work, just reformat. It takes only like 2 hours or so if you are well prepared and have all your programs handy. I usually partition my drive so I can reformat my OS drive faster and grab programs from the other partitions.
