svchost.exe local service is taking 80% of system process!!!help!!

I dont know when it started but its using over 80% of my system resources!! I click end task (xp) and the service goes away for a while but comes back at 8%... and then climbs back up to over 70 or 80 % like an hour two later... so my questions is what is this exe for and how can find out what program is bringing it to life and kill that program.. any ideas?
