SVChost.exe is eating up my resources

Hello,

Recently I built a new Desktop, and reconfigured an exsisting laptop for a friends business.
I put WinXP with Sevice Pack 2 on both PCs. They were wrking great when I handed them over to him.
I also AVG Anti Virus (free Edition) on both comps.

After less than a week they started to run parlessly slow, so I went and took a look at them.

On both systems the Process svchost.exe seems to be eating up resources.
(In Task Manager under the processes tap, the process is using between 2-3% CPU on the Desktop, and about 14% CPU on the Laptop.)

I had this problem on my comp about a month back, but it was a blaster worm.

It doesnt appear to be a known Blaster.worm (or variant) on these 2 computers.
I dowloaded the Blaster removal tools from Symantec.com, and they didn't detect any of the files.

I have also determined that the Instance of svchost that is using the resources is running the services "DcomLaunch", and "TermService".
From what i have read, Dcom appears to be one of the exploits of the blaster.worm family
This in turn made me believe that i had a blaster worm variant.

I verified that it wasn't a blaster worm by using the w32.blaster removal tool found at Symantec.com. The test came back on both computers saying that they were not infected.

I would greatly apreciate some insight as to wut this problem might be.

Thank you,

It dose not have to be a worm or virus. it can be adware or tracking software sending
info back to a server. install a firewall like zone alarm to stop these programs from accessing the
internet. but before you do that download ad- aware or spybot and scan the computer
after downloading the latest updates. there are free online virus scans. mcaffe has one.
It will do a scan with up to date virus's and tell you if you have any. it does not remove
them but let's tells you what they are. sasser is the virus causing the most problems
now on unprotected machines.make sure you have all the windows
critical updates installed.

Just one more piece of info: adware and worms can use scvhost.exe to mask
themselves.

Thanks JK,

I knew that svchost could mask viri by operating dll files. But i didnt think to run SpyBOT. (Even though i run it like every week on my comp). Anyways, i had the latest defs for AVG, but ill look into that McAffe online scan.

Thanks a bunch ill let ya know how it goes in about a week,

I've been testing it on my comp for about a month and it has seemed to work fine. The built in firewall is very good, and its didn't seem to be buggy at all.

I hope i didn't make a mistake by putting it on these PC's.

I'll have more info by Wed (Probably).

Is this RC1 or earlier? Pre-RC1, there was an issue that would do this. Uninstall the SP and is should go away.

Hello all,

I uninstalled SP2 and it helped, but the systems are still running a bit sluggishly, it looks like I may have to reinstall windows on them from scratch.

O well,

svchost.exe is necessary to run a lot of system processes. try getting a spyware scanner that will remove some of the adware on the computers.

I installed this on my last visit, it helped, but only marginally, when i go into a Cmd Prompt and typ tasklist/ svc, svchost.exe isn't running any extraneous processes.

So i think ill have to reinstal windows, first ill proly try LeadMagnets fix.

THanks guys,

SP2 RC2 was released recently.

I'll try installing that and see if it take care of the problem.

Do u guys thinks thats smart?

If the thing was a bug in the previous service pack RC, then sure. Svchost is a SERVICE hosting program, so go to services.msc and disable services until the memory leak stops. You could also go to a command prompt and type in 'tasklist /svc' and get some additional information.

Ive done the tasklist/svc thing and it ddin't reveal much. I need to disable the unecesary services tho, that should fix some stuff.

As for the disabling svchost, it will make the PC unstable (or so i've heard), and some things won't work. They still run slugish but they're usable.

Its probably nothing. I havenoticed a big increase in memory usage from SP1a to any of the realeases of SP2. YOUR FINE!!!

Install SP2 RC2, and be off. It works great for me, but thats just me.

If your really worried backup reinstall windows, and dld all the SP1a. I would highly reccommend SP2 RC2 as it is very good and virtually no bugs (that i have found) yet.

I haven't had that problem... sounds like something wrong with your chipset drivers or IDE drivers. ATAPI IIRC has to do with CD-ROM/removeable media. Not sure. How did you install the Service Pack. Just over SP1 or did you do a fresh install.
