Since the GC68 highly rated basic heatsink was out of stock, I ordered a goldengate 40 heatsink and a generic 60mm fan as a starter combo for cooling my new Athalon XP 1600+. I got the package today, and I noticed first that spinning the fan blades makes the entire fan assembly gyrate a bit, as if it were off-balance. I then took out the heatsink, and saw what I assume is some kind of thermal paste smudged on the side and on the bottom, where it would be set on a CPU. The clips seem a bit bent, and though I'm not sure whether there are usually any kind of instuction sheets packaged with heatsinks or fans, that was all that was in the box.
Does this sound like a problem? I know I can clean off this heatsink, but this is my first project and I'm trying not to take any unnecessary risks.
