Hello everyone I am new to Anandtech seems like a great place for info. My friend Bad Thad said I should check it out and he was right aewsome place.
My questions is about cheap silent OC'ing solution. I want to OC a XP 1600+ on a Chaintec Apogee Mobo and I was wondering if the SVC GC68 is a good choice for a Heatsink. I have read the reviews and Alpha PAL8045 looks like the best choice but Im afraid to spend all that money and have mounting issues. The Thermalright AX 7 seems like a nice one too but again its big and really expensive. Im looking for quiet OC'ing I know thats almost crazy to ask but looks like theres a lot of intelligent people in here so I hope one of you can help me figure out a solution.

Thanx in Advance

You might try it and see... not much of an investment involved. :D The stock fan on the GC-68 is not what I'd call "silent," and its performance falls off with the use of lower-RPM fans.

I'm in the same boat, since I have a 1600+ that can run 1750MHz, but the heatsink/fan unit I have runs a bit louder than I like. All of the high-performance heatsinks I'm considering cost at least 50% of what the CPU is worth! And that's without a fan! But I keep reminding myself that I can re-use the new heatsink on other CPUs later, and eventually I'll talk myself into either the 8045 (I have one already) or else the new Thermalright SK-7, which apparently is the replacement for the AX-7 and rivals the performance of the Alpha and the Tr SLK-800, for less money. And note that it clips on, not bolts on.

PS: also note that 2Cooltek has pretty good deals on the heatsink + fan combo. The YS Tech adjustable fan might be a good choice, since you can dial in the noise/airflow level that suits you. It ranges from very quiet to moderately loud.

Hope that helps, welcome to the Forums :D

Hey thanx for the tip I was under the impression that the Thermal Right SLK-800 was the latest champ. It doesnt seem too bad especially no bolt on issues to worry about. A bit cheaper that the Alpha too I might just check this one out. I would still like to hear from other people before making a decision.

Thanx for the welcome the info I have been able to gather from these forums is amazing
