I hate SUV's too, and you be surprised how many time I see one fat socceer mom or some d!ckhead driving these huge things all by themselves. I tell you, if I ever get hit by one of them and walk away from the crash, I'm gonna show them just how unsafe their suv really is. :frown:

Seek counseling.

Why? So I can be just like the rest of em? Maybe I should start shoving down fries and soda to look like the rest of em too?

you need to seriously shut the fvck up.

Pfft... whatever dude. Keep ur suv. It's a fad, and will go the same way as disco, ska, and all the like.

the station wagons.... minivans.... cars with more than 4.8L engines for under 50k

Maybe not a Civic, but a Subaru Outback or Forrester would probably handle the terrain and weather without the rollover issue. Out of curiousity, what did people there use prior to "invention" of the SUV? Say, in the 60's, 70's, and 80's?

Well, yes, clearly that was an option, but what did families use? I mean, the family of five didn't just all pile inside their 2-door step side, right? Just to be clear, I'm not trying to be a PITA, I just have a hard time believing that the SUV allowed the population of the intractable wilderness of central NY.

My test consisted of driving on a few 30mph streets, stopping at stop signs, making turns and parallel parking. There are very few people who can't do that. If they want to weed out bad drivers these retests would have to be a lot tougher.

Maybe there should be some kind of training every X years where people learn how to drive more safely. Things like how to handle a skid, keeping track of whats around you, etc. Quite frankly our current testing system needs improvement.

Actually that's a very good idea, leave suvs as passenger vehicles but create a new category that requires an upgrade on your license to drive one. To get the upgrade the driver has to take a 3 hour course in SUV driving safety. Charge like $40 for the course. If people can afford an SUV, they can afford a $40 course that would save lives.

I have to admit I hate SUVs but...

I don't think they should go away, there are certainly people with needs who would need them. And probably a lot more people with money to blow on gas etc.

My thing is that these SUV owners don't seam to realize how much manuvering ability they are losing. They see these SUV commercials tearing it up through dirt and rocks and they think that they can do that sort of thing anywhere and with little driving ability. I've seen many crashes in fairly low speed accidents where an SUV gets flipped or rolled on it's side. It's not only dangrous to them but to everyone around them of course. I personally think we should have a new classifification of drivers licenses for SUV/truck owners so they must goto a class of some sort to learn how to drive their SUV/truck first. Certainly isn't a perfect solution as many won't learn either way but its an attempt at educating the public. I don't see this advertising as effective, the people who actually know the dangers are probably the people who will look at this and not the other way around.

If we're going to do any enhancement to driver licenses then we should require all licenses be renewed with a road test/written test every X years. This will weed out those old farts who refuse to stop driving even though they can't drive for sh!t and end up dragging a woman 200 ft before realizing he hit her
I've driven my Rodeo SUV since '95 (my first car)... and my mom has a Talon (eclipse) and it's real low to the ground. The thing is definitely more agile in changing lanes, but it's not THAT big of a difference from an SUV, honestly. The biggest difference is... don't attempt a 90 degree corner doing 40+ in an SUV... you're not going to be sliding on wheels for long.

Anyway, I much prefer the ride of my truck - so much smoother, don't even feel the ground... while the torque is plenty to keep me happy. I guess if you have a general need for speed and want to feel every bump, then these sports cars are for you. Doing 70mph in my truck feels "floaty" and effortless while doing 70mph in the Talon - I feel like I'm actually breaking the law doing 90. And it doesn't even come with motion blur.

Back to the point - you don't need a course to drive an SUV... you just need to leave the teenage angst and testosterone for another time. No course will guarantee that.

The seat in those old trucks is HUGE. You can easily fit 3 large sized adults, so 1 large adult male + wife + 3 kids wouldn't be that bad. Plus thats why they sit on mommy's lap.

meh, raised trucks are much worse. all safety features are basically nullified when your bumper smacks into the head of a guy sitting in a standard suv:p

Just so you know, there's a happy medium between the Talon and Rodeo. At some point in sedan-land you get cars that can make the 100degree (if not 90) turs at 40mph while remaining on all 4 wheels, a smooth ride, and plenty of torque. Being a sedan driver, I find the "float" of many SUV's unnerving. I'm not interested in every bump, but I like knowing I'm attached to the ground, not just bobbing along on the wind currents. Oh, and you can often spend less on gas and tires, if that's of interest.

of interest to me is the ability to carry whatever I like (4 fences from Home Depot + 4 passengers) and have 4WD (thank you snow!) while enjoying the nice torque and comfy ride. I guess I'm all about the complete package. And it is still < $30k.

BTW, the "floaty" feeling was just that... but you can rest assured you weigh much more than a sedan so the winds won't take you anywhere.

"Daily driver" to the train station was the happy medium 90 Accord which I was infinitely glad to donate away at the end of its life. That thing was so dull.

Ah yes, the sign of the mature mind - "What...EVER dood!"

An SUV is a eminently utilitarian vehicle for many owners.

And a penis extension (or surrogate) for many others. It's this group that most "SUV haters" have a problem with. There are some simple tests to determine if you're in the 2nd category. Please let me know if they should be added to or corrected.

You added after-market wheels with a larger diameter because "they look tight"
You added after-market wheels with a larger diameter because they gave better on-street performance
The only dirt your vehicle has ever seen was in an unpaved parking lot
You've never used the towing capability
It doesn't snow where you live
It doesn't snow where you live, but you go skiing, like, once a year
It does snow where you live, but you bought the 2wd version
The greatest number of people you've ever had in the vehicle is 4
It was either an SUV or a minivan to haul around the kids and the latter didn't fit your "image"
You don't put dirty stuff in the back because it will mess up the carpet
You claim you bought it for safety, but have received one or more tickets driving it
You wash it weekly and not just to get salt off of it
You use it in your daily 60+ mile r.t. to the office, while your wife/husband drives a Civic for the 2 mile r.t. to the park & ride

There. That should annoy someone here.

Most ppl I've seen in suv's don't have more than 1 person in it, so guess which category they're in?

OH BOY ANOTHER SUV THREAD!!!!
This one will turn out the same way as all the others.

In the end, this society will fail just like many others because we continually fail to curb our consumption. Our utter lack of consideration for anybody but ourselves will destroy this society.
