My fiance' and I currently live downtown Minneapolis (1 block from her office) and only have one vehicle now... We will be moving to the burbs and have to get her something new(ish).

She is set on a small SUV and I think we would like to cap the price at ~$20k (more if new or it is a great deal) and mileage to 60k or less.

What she currently likes -
Mazda CX-7
Nissan Rogue
Hyundai Tucson
Ford Edge
... anyone have experience with any of these Good/Bad/Otherwise?
Thanks!

She HATES her mother's 4 cyl. Ford Escape because it is "ugly" and soooo slow and sluggish, so my guess the only ones she'll actually enjoy once she test drives them all would be the Turbo'd CX-7 or a V6 Edge.

.... If I end up getting a vote I think I would suggest the CX-7, only because the local dealer has a nice RX-8 I wouldn't mind trying to package the two for cars and see if we can score a deal.

Thanks!

Used the Edge as a rental - did not feel comfortable in it; seemed bulky - a compromise between a true SUV and a small sedan.
I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee and had used a Impala for 300 miles the week before.

Have her test drive via dealership what ever you have filtered on.
Then based on her preferences; spend the $$ and let her try one of what ever as a rental for a week;

The new Forester does not stack up well against the current crop of new SUV's - not enough HP, terrible CVT, subpar interior materials, low-tech Nav screen.

CX7 is extremely tight in the rear seating as well.

Have a look at:
Used Rav 4 V6
2014 CX5 with 2.5L (the 2013 only came with 2.0L)
Ford Escape 2.0L Turbo Ecoboost or used Escape/Mariner V6

We had an '09 Ford Escape V6 that the wife loved.

Bought it in CA and used it in CO.
Got 30mpg coming across NV/UT at 80mph

It was tough enough to protect us when we were t-boned.

Plenty of room for 3 adults and 2 grandkids along with 2 cocker spaniels

Rav4 is out since her best friend has one... and she does not like it

CX5 is on the test drive list since we'll be at the mazda dealer anyway, but since we would need to get a new one, the price might be an issue... unless of course they have attractive offers for new.

She hates her mother's escape body style and how sluggish it is (4 cyl), to get the V6 and the newest body style it will push her budget.

The Rogue is a bit generic, but it's a good all-around vehicle for the price. Rav4 is similar but seems more basic.

Wouldn't bother with the Fords. Wouldn't bother with the Mazdas unless you think she'll really appreciate their strongest area (handling).

I will get shit for mentioning this car, but I tend to know what women want...beyond 'not me'...

...has she looked at a Juke? Chicks all seem to like Jukes.

She does really like the Lexus RX line, but finding something within her budget and miles might be tough. RDX is also one she likes, but the budget is limiting again.

Other possibilities that have been ruled out by her already -
CRV - my mom has one and she hates it
Equinox - had a rental and she hated the blind spots
Terrain - friend has one, she hates how boxy it is

I showed her one last night and her response, and I quote, "Sure, and you can get a Pontiac Aztec so we can have the two ugliest cars ever made."

I really want to like the CRV more, but it's just a lot of money for not as much as you think you should be getting. Not great gas mileage, high price, meh visibility.

It was the same with the Honda Element - I REALLY liked the Element - roomy enough for my bikes, hose it out to clean it, tailgate, etc. But the starting price was $23k, and the starting price on the Kia Soul was only $13k at the time, with only ~20 sq. feet less room. Went with the Kia & did not regret at all, and now they're not even making the Element anymore...

Have you considered the CX-5?

The new Subaru Forester or Subaru Outback. Both has standard AWD, decent fuel economy for an AWD vehicle.

I want it to ride like a car, but be up high so I can see.
Seriously, 100% dead on.

The only car she would consider is an IS250awd, I use to have one and she loved it... but she wants to sit up high, have it be quick and handle well, and get decent mpgs.... so yes, exactly what you said.... Maybe just get her a booster seat in a IS2

yeah it's stupid though because then you get people driving oversized shit cars with too much confidence just because it's a SUV, when in fact the visibility isn't much better and when shit hits the fan, it doesn't stop any sooner than a car.
I also noticed fat people get SUVs because they can't fit into normal cars.

I can't stand the Juke, good taste.

Mazda axed the CX-7, so the values of used ones should go down. Possible bargain to be had, if you plan on keeping it for many years. Then again, the CX-5 is so much better than the CX-7 that you may regret not paying more to get it.

Based on my 2.0L Mazda, I'm gonna go with 'probably.'

Checking...holy balls, that's kinda terrible. The turbo (probably what she'd want, based on posted 'too slow' complaints) is 19mpg mixed in 2012. That car needs a V6, those numbers kinda say '4cyl praying for death' to me...

Yet the 2.0L CX-5 is somehow rated higher than my 3. Shenanigans.

A lot of those are mutually exclusive. I don't really follow SUVs, but a used RAV4 v6 is where I'd probably start.
