SUV bashers - Why don't YOU own a Civic?

I'm kinda in between the sides on this issue. I respect the right of someone to drive a 10,000lb+ hummer H1, but personally don't see the need for anything more than a small car. From personal experience I notice FAR more SUV drivers, are flat out assholes, cross over center-lines more and in general are hazards on the road. I also notice alot of mini-vans like that, except they are always going much slower as if the driver is just an incompetent middle-aged female.

I own a Astro... van built on a truck frame... horrible mileage for a V6, plenty of room. I barely carry anything around. But I Like It! I don't like a civic and I would never myself bash somebody for buying a car more "grander" for what "I" think "their" needs should be. Buy any fragin car you enjoy and reap the benefits and losses of that vehicle.

Heh I drove an Astro van a few years back for a summer job with then-Ameritech, now Verizon wireless. Pretty fun to drive, but yeah the mileage kind of sucked, but hey it was company paid so what did i care? (someone has to do the "can you hear me now? - goooood" testing - no kidding)

awd turbo dsm's are nice, but like every car that you mod, mod it enough and you'll be looking at some sort of reliability problem... usually specific to the car, like a unique characteristic of the car, you could say... i don't know what it is for the 1st gen dsm's, but i know for my car it's that the apex seals are very vulnerable to detonation...

You do realize he said he owns an Eclipse right? You do also realize that they made FWD turbo Eclipses right? You do realize a WRX is slow.
No I don't drive a Ferrari. You don't know anything about cars so don't even try.

Just proving they exist..contrary to what some believe.. 😉

They DO make FWD turbo Eclipses jackass. I never said they didn't make AWD Eclipses. I know they make them because I have drive one on numerous occasions. HE NEVER SAID if his was AWD or FWD now did he?

WOW look a FWD turbo DSM!

WOW JUST WOW!

Are you referring to halik? Because halik stated that he had an awd 5-speed eclipse in his first or second post in the thread.

We almost purchased a SUV for the tax benefit (business vehicle) and incredible subsidies being offered by domestic automakers. But we are real environmentalists so the only SUVs we can consider are imports like the MDX/Pilot (great capacity, best in class fuel economy, ULEV).

Technically, I drive an Acura but by platform it's essentially a Civic. The wife drives an Aurora POS but it doesn't make any sense to replace her vehicle which gets 19 city for a SUV which would increase her fuel costs by 25% without a real increase in functionality.

Every vehicle is dangerous when poorly driven. But SUVs are more dangerous in the hands of the incompetent. If you are comparing SUVs to an M5, M3, or a twin-turbo rocket riding on 20s then it's difficult for the car people to argue SUVs are a disproportionate waste of resources. But the truth is that when you sit in your respective traffic jam on Mon AM and look around . . . you see a bunch of people driving alone into the city. And these days more than half are wasting more than they should b/c they are driving SUVs.

Now tell me, what minivan sits 9 people and still has a crapload of room for cargo?

And if you have the consistent need to seat 9 people and a crapload of cargo, by all means, please buy an SUV...or a Thomasbuilt bus.

I wonder if most of these bashers would feel the same way if the lived up north in places like Michigan or Minnesota.

This thread is unfreakingbelievable.

People choose what they drive for various reasons.

I own a Civic Hatchback... and I also own a GMC Jimmy.

I bought the Jimmy after witnessing and accident in front of me where a guy in a z28 sideswiped a car parked on the left inside median (that car was a hazzard in and off itself) at around 75mph (what appears to be the normal speed :disgust: on Interstate 94 in Illinois just south of the Wisconsin border)... this in turn ripped off the entire side of the camaro. The driver who was wearing his seatbelt was held in his seat while the car started spinning in circles with him held in at the hips and his head repeatedly banging off the pavement.

I have NEVER felt safe in the Civic, and this event made me feel even more afraid. While the Civic is a GREAT car, 53mpg highway is hard to spit at, the Jimmy gets 23mpg highway. I also choose to live VERY close to where I work... my commute is only 4 miles each way. A tank of gas lasts me about 3 weeks... give or take.

Do I feel bad about this? No... I feel safe. Well safer anyway.

If you really want to get to a problem area, it is NOT the vechicle, it is the driver and the amount of things that cause distraction these days... My biggest pet peive is going to be Cell phones... 9 times out of 10 if someone around me is veering out of their lane it will be because they are stumbling around with a cell phone. And this problem occurs regardless of the class of the vehicle. I have never in my 25 years of driving had to be more of a defensive driver than I have in the last 5 years as EVERYONE is now getting cell phones.
