Sushi makes my skin crawl

Every week, one of my banker friends brings me some nice sushi (I guess), and some of that wassabi (hot sauce).

I down it all, then excuse myself and run to the B.R., where I spit it out. What would be a polite way of saying Prime Rib, Lobster, or anything else would probably be easier on me?

Ugh...

Just thinking about that stuff make me sick. :( Tell him it's been making you sick lately, so you can't eat it.

I guess I was raised to never look a gift horse in the mouth. Should I just dissapear at lunch time? Why is the trend toward sushi?
I'm just not into it. :(

Try my approach. He's obviously being generous with the food and doesn't know you would like something else unless you mention it to him.

I agree with the OP. Sure, once in a while, I like sushi, but I could never eat it frequently.

Every time he gives you sushi poke him in the eye with a chopstick.

Maybe I should call in advance and say, hey, mike, what did you have in mind for lunch today? I really am feeling like some beef...know a good prime rib shop? ;)

The subtle approach:

Week 1 - poke the sushi like an Ewok for a couple of minutes, do that "jumba jumba" stuff too
Week 2 - hide under your desk, rocking and whimpering
Week 3 - jump out of the nearest window

I doubt you'd need a plan for week 4.

Dude, grow a sack and tell the co-worker you don't eat it.

Why are there always threads on ATOT in dealing with the simplest issues in life?

To a certain extent, I understand your problem because I was originally not a fan of sushi, and it took me some time to become accustomed to it.

Now, however, it is quite literally my favorite food. If you offered to take me anywhere for dinner, all expenses paid, I would choose sushi without question.

It might be worth it to put some effort into learning to like it. Start slow, perhaps just ordering some rolls like the california roll (no raw fish) or a spicy tuna roll where the fish is pureed and a bit easier on the palette. After that, move up to something like a rainbow roll where you can try a selection of whole fish pieces draped over a california roll. Eventually (or at least, hopefully) you'll be craving big pieces of nigiri sushi and sashimi like a homegrown Japanese national. :)

It's also relevant that the pieces your co-worker is offering you aren't hardly as fresh as they were when they were plated in the restaurant. Even as big of a fan as I am, I dislike sushi that isn't very fresh.

This is not a co-worker, but is a banker I have a very good relationship with. He visits me once a week, but always brings sushi.

Sushi is an acquired taste. You'll grow to like it. You might even come to love it.

I feel your pain OP, I can't even post about sushi without getting that revolting smell of fish in my nose. How people can actually get "hooked" on this stuff I'll never know.

Just go this route one day:

Friend: Yo! Brought you some sushi...
You: Thanks... (act really out of it at the sight/smell of sushi that day)
Friend: Dude, you alright?
You: Yeah... I don't think I'm going to be able to eat this today.
Friend: Really? Why not??
You: Well, my girlfriend asked me if I would try something new last night...

I love Tuna Sushi but not other fish like Salmon etc.

Do you know what type of Sushi he is bringing? maybe you could go to a good Sushi bar and try a few things so you have something to compare his Sushi to and maybe you can find a particular type that you like.

Do you like the Wasabi? I love that stuff, after eating seriously spicy stuff for years, Wasabi is the only thing that still packs a wallop  even though it is brief.
