Susanne Atanus, Who Blames Gay Rights For Tornadoes, Wins GOP Nomination For Congress

A Republican candidate who believes that God dictates weather patterns and that tornadoes, autism and dementia are God's punishments for marriage equality and abortion access won the GOP nomination to challenge Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) in the Chicago-area 9th Congressional District.

"I am not in favor of abortions, I am not in favor of gay rights," Atanus told the Daily Herald, a suburban Chicago newspaper, in January.

She blamed natural disasters and mental disorders on recent advances in LGBT equality and legal abortions.

"God is angry. We are provoking him with abortions and same-sex marriage and civil unions," she said. "Same-sex activity is going to increase AIDS. If it's in our military, it will weaken our military. We need to respect God."

"Everybody knows that God controls weather," she told the news site in January. "God is super angry," she added. "Gay marriage is not appropriate, and it doesn't look right, and it breeds AIDS.

republicans don't have a chance of winning in chicago, so there's no point in attempting to field a decent candidate.

what's your point?

Pretty much this.

Was going to say something then saw Chicago.

That's basically where GOP candidate hopefuls are sent to rot.

And yet tornadoes and hurricanes overwhelmingly hit places that tend to vote more conservative and support "family values." Why are the Godly being punished and the heathens getting away scot-free? Perhaps geography plays a roll... :colbert:

Well, yeh, but they seem to unabashedly field the same sort of candidates everywhere, having embraced the crazy decades ago. Should she win, she could join such notables as Louie Gohmert & Michelle Bachmann.

If a political party would apoint idiots like this as candidates for several areas, even if they wouldn't be able to win regardless of who they'd send, it might send a message to undecided voters that the GOP consists of extremist idiots who in their ideas are quite similar to the Taliban. Say you see several candidates like this being pushed forward, would you then trust their judgment when it came to candidates in the swing states?

Pretty much this....you don't change the situation if you keep running crazy kooks. I hope most of us can agree this woman is a kook. She should hook up with the Westboro Baptist bunch and see if she can launch a daughter church.

Louie Gohmert's constituency would trust 'em, in a heartbeat. So would Bachmann's, and it's not that far to Chicago.

Which, if we think about it at all, touches on other subjects, like gerrymandering, unequal representation, and the notion that there is no sin when on a mission from God.

One conservative idiot does not make all conservatives idiots but they certainly have a wonderful collection of them.

I would love to see this person debate a psychiatrist. Maybe debates should be changed into televised therapy sessions...

Yes, because the republicans that actually win congressional and senate seats are the paragon of intelligence. Have you heard of Michelle Bachman by any chance?

It would take divine intervention for a Repub to win in Chicago, and it's so corrupt, who outside of the city even cares? At least she'll be entertaining to watch for the next few months, she's certifiably bonkers.

The Chicago is corrupt narrative is getting old. Republicans have won in Illinois and in Chicago when they have good candidates.
