@ivwshane, it's the truth. When McGovern lost to Nixon, it so traumatized the Dems that they sold their souls in order to win, and stopped running candidates who support the working class. They shifted further and further economically rightwards, and stopped caring beyond shallow virtue-signalling about said candidates' social positions.

This crap is how we ended up with Reagan not one decade later. Yes, the GOP has been basically Satan's spawn since the Civil Rights movement when they decided their constituency was people who spelled (or at least pronounced) "black people" with two Gs in it, but the Dems abandoned the working class not even a decade after.

The polarization grew because the major parties became more distinct between liberal vs conservative primarily over civil rights (you know, whether blacks are Real people), just look at that graph of when the line inflected. That's why race resentment is basically the best predictor of party affiliation, arguably even better than race itself. Back in the day, many democrats simply weren't liberal.

Many of these conflicts are largely irreconcilable views between the future and the past. For example, once women start attaining education on par with men, women's rights naturally become a settled issue.

I am not so sure. If there had been a President Clinton instead of Obama we could have still had a president Trump.
