Survivorman!

For some reason I was watching the Science Channel and this show came on. A survival professional is dropped off in the middle of nowhere and has to live for a week while filming the whole thing. He's been in the arctic, in a forest, on the ocean, all over. It's pretty fascinating.

I don't find him to be much of an expert... fairly knowledgable though.
I do find the show amusing from time to time; however a lot of the show seems exaggerated, including his ability.
It was a great concept for a television show though - I'm sure the concept is his, rather than someone else said "hey, do this and we'll pay you."

I really like it - it's hard to believe he's the only one out there with some of the shots he gets. The Artic episode showed that concept the best. For every awesome shot of him walking into the horizon, there was also footage of him walking back to get his camera. I first saw it on the Discovery channel - except they edit the episodes down to 1/2 hour, so they kind of seem off.

You can buy the entire first season for $40CAD from his website - that's damn cheap for 9 episodes and the Q&A show. Considering what Discovery normally charges for their shows on DVD, that's a steal.

Maybe I should add - for those people who spend the majority of their time in the city/suburbs i.e. the majority of people in the U.S., he may seem pretty amazing. But, to the people who spend a significant time in the woods hunting, hiking, backpacking, etc., many of his skills aren't that impressive.

glad you like our fine Canadian programming.

for home improvement and renovations, please watch Holmes on Homes on HGTV.

I saw it - and I saw a similar show (maybe the same one?) with an ex-Navy SEAL that was younger. He parachuted into an unknown land and had no idea where he was (somewhere in Canadian rockies). That guy was hardcore... jumping off a steep cliff into a river (extremely dangerous) and eating raw fish. By "raw" I mean still alive - he grabbed a fish out of a pond and bit into it while it was still alive. This was was 100x more extreme than the most hardcore hiker/backpacker I've ever seen. When he finally found a road, he had to repel down a cliff using a single string from his parachute.

I like watching Holmes on Homes because they deal with renovations gone very wrong. Either someone gets ripped off or the renovator lacks the skill to do the job. Mike Holmes come to their rescue. He is a real stickler for doing the job right, the first time.

I am now buying the show's on DVD.
