Survival Supplies for winter, hurricanes, tornadoes..whatever

Hello all,

I am putting together a small survival setup for winter, and other special occasions.

My cars are getting jumper cables, blankets, some extra tools, sand/kitty litter, etc.

What things can you guys think of that are a "must have" for either my cars or my home? Where are good places to buy these things?

Thanks

Circular saw, refridgerator/freezer(fully stocked), 1000watt(min) power inverter, TV w/sat. dish & xbox, 2 screw drivers, a complete craftsman toolset (the most expensive one is the best), washer/dryer (if you have extra room), desktop computer, laptop computer (in case your desktop fails), digital camera, halogen light (300watt min), shotgun, fire extinguisher, microwave. If I think of anything else, I'll let you know.

EDIT: Maybe carry a separate gas generator in case your battery is dead and the inverter doesn't work.

For the car, carry at least a flashlight or something to signal with. Toss a spare warm blanket in the trunk; it's amazing how often I end up using the one I carry (even having to drive home after coming down with the flu on a cold day, it's nice to be warmer) Extra tools are useless unless you know how to use them (know how to fix the car) Poptarts and water bottles may be nice, but in reality, you're probably not going to be stuck in your car so long that food or water is an issue. If you're in an area where they would be of use on occasion, a set of chains for the tires comes in handy.

you can do like some idiots do...put all your money into weaponry and assume you will just kill your neighbors if you need anything

that was a discussion one night in a bar during the WTC stuff.

UNless you're a cold hearted bastard and plan to abandon them, you'll remember to bring some pet food as well.

I keep in my car

a case of MRE entrees
two gallons of water in sealed containers
first aid kit
road flares
folding shovel
rope (100 ft)
recovery strap
bag of kitty litter (winter only)
truckers triangles
road flares
chemical heaters (large box) (work great for MREs as well)
candles
extra flashlight batteries
one of those wind up radio/flashlights from Target
small tool kit + hose patches, extra belts
a small thing of that emergency fuel stuff
space blankets (2)
12v cigarette Lighter Battery Jump Stater

All of this mostly fits in the compartment under my passenger seat, and the well under my cargo compartment.

The Kitty litter is for my the tires on my car, not my cat. Cold climate people know what I am talking about.

Lighter is a must have. If you're going to use a Zippo type lighter add a can of fluid to the list also.
Knife, rope, blanket, jacket or fleece (I'd consider this a maybe item)
If you're planning for some long stretches of time where you're in an emergency situation, some sterno and MRE's or other of the sam types of food.

I used to work for them, and they know their stuff. Give them a call if you'd like (800-866-4876)

Looks like some really cool stuff here. I like the "Solar powered lamp/radio".

Stuff seems a little science fictiony, but cool none the less. Has anyone else done business with these guys? Beau, what have you used of theirs?
