Survey: More than half of Republicans support Christian nationalism

According to survey data from the Public Religion Research Institute and Brookings Institution, more than half of Republican voters either explicitly endorse or sympathize with the concept of Christian nationalism — that is, imposing a theocracy on the country. They're the minority as a whole, 29 percent, but that's not exactly reassuring.

As a researcher points out, this appears to be a reaction to the country becoming less white and Christian — if they can't be the de facto rulers, they'll simply seize power. In the survey, 50 percent of nationalists and 38 percent of sympathizers support the idea of an authoritarian leader if it means preserving their values. (It also won't surprise you to hear that Christian nationalists are disproportionately racist, sexist and xenophobic.)

I suspect Christian nationalism will fade as the US becomes increasingly non-religious and more culturally diverse. The tricky bit, of course, is making sure these nationalists don't claim or expand power in the meantime. The MTGs and DeSantises out there can't be allowed to increase their authority, as they probably wouldn't blink at violating civil liberties on a national scale if given the chance.

It seems these nationalists have a very sympathetic SCOTUS to back their play in this regard. All they really need is to get the Senate led by McConnell back in their hands and away they go again at either shredding the Constitution to bits and pieces or reinterpreting it to their liking ie-Citizens United, 2A, the list grows longer the more they stay in power.

the good news (for Americans, not republicans) is this....

"According to the PRRI/Brookings study, only 10% of Americans view themselves as adherents of Christian nationalism and about 19% of Americans said they sympathize with these views."

so under 1/3 or Americans are cool with Christofascism. now we just need to get more Americans to vote.

Like usual, basically. And we all know exactly why one party works so diligently to against that.

I personally love jacked up trucks and suv's with a tactical Jesus sticker on the back window sitting right across from a stick family built of guns and the American flag made out of bullets.

Cognitive dissonance is a hell of a drug. These people are so lost and beyond the fold at this point.

People in those vehicles are the equivalent of malignant cancer cells in the body.

So Healthcare, Food and Housing for everyone?

That's the ironic bit. You'd think it would be selfless charity, meek shall inherit the Earth and all that... but no, for these folks "Christian nationalism" would just mean squashing rights for women, the LGBT community and (of course) non-Christians.

This is one of the many reasons I'm non-religious. I don't believe in forcing ideology on others by giving them no choice but to obey it. Atheists can do that too, of course, but religions practically encourage it.

"Christian Nationalism" is a bigger oxymoron than "Jumbo Shrimp".

These people are pretty much the exact opposite of what a "Christian" is supposed to be, living lives based on fear and hate. They're anything but "Christ-like" in their behavior.

Jesus would be appalled.

We've had Christian nationalism before. It was called the KKK. Germany had Christian nationalism too, they called it the NAZI party. Interesting that dictatorships like Russia and China don't adopt Christian nationalism as a way of controlling their people even more. It works pretty well over here.

These days, whenever I hear anything being backed by terms like Christian nationalism or parents rights or protecting the children I see red flags all over the place. The last thing they are, are Christians, and this thing with pushing parents rights has noting to do with rights, and their claims of protecting the children does nothing to protect children. In fact, our future mass murderers will come from families who support Christian nationalism, and parents rights, and protecting the children. Talk about kids being groomed.

My first thought was 'good' if we wind up in a nationalist Christian state, and the non Republicans have been eliminated, they nationalists will turn on those fellow Republicans who were not is such favor.

You haven't noticed the reemergence of the Russian Orthodox church in Russia? It's just about at state religion status. Another plus for the Pubs.
