Does the length of cable used for the rear surround speakers need to be equal for each speaker? If they're not, will they sound out of phase?

yeah, don't worry about it by any means.

if you have a super long run to your rear speakers, though (i.e. greater than 50 feet or so), make sure you have a decent gauge of wire
