Surround sound using z-5500 and an ipod

Just wondering if this is possible, or how you can make it work...

One time just tinkering around i found a male to male headphone type wire, hooked one into the line in on the control panel of the z-5500 and the other in the ipod, and only the front 2 speakers worked (don't remember if the sub did, i think it did) (speakers are at school, im at home for the summer) But i want teh surround sound!

I change the effect to "PLII Music" and it plays out of all five speakers. Not technically surround, but 5 > 2.
"PLII Movie" plays it out of all 5 with emphasis on the center speaker, "6 Ch Direct" (the surround effect) play it from all 5 speakers, wih significantly less "oomph", and Stereo x2 plays it from the 4 corner speakers.
