Surround sound using z-5500 and an ipod

Just wondering if this is possible, or how you can make it work...

One time just tinkering around i found a male to male headphone type wire, hooked one into the line in on the control panel of the z-5500 and the other in the ipod, and only the front 2 speakers worked (don't remember if the sub did, i think it did) (speakers are at school, im at home for the summer) But i want teh surround sound!

I don't think 5.1 is possible, but 4.1 is possible. Just change your settings to stereo x 2.

So, according to this I just push that switch to stereo, and what, do I need a 1 --> 3 1/8" adapter??

Found someone having a similar problem here ( scroll down) but I don't have any rca in jacks

You'll probably get better responses in the Peripherals Section.

Also, my Z-5300 has a Matrix Mode. Its sort of a cheap Dolby Pro Logic.
Its better than any artificial surround you'll get from an iPod anyway, and requires fewer wires.

Doesnt the 5500 have something similar?

you don't need RCA. just get a single audio cable and push it into anyof the jacks on the back. if you connect it to the music note on the side, sounds will be noticeably more quiet. why, I don't know.

Couldn't you use a cable that has a male headphone plug on one end and splits into the red and white audio connectors on the other (my portable cd player included one of these) then plug the red and white from that into something like the Logitech game adapter which accepts the red and white plugs and outputs to 3 plugs (front, rear, center). My OEM X530s came with one of these adapters (for hooking up the 5.1 speakers directly to a game console), though yours is a digital setup so I'm not sure if its the same.

I have the Z-5500s myself, this is what you do if you want surround out of them from a stereo source. Bring the switch down from 6ch Direct to Stereo 1-3 and use one of the jacks back there OR use the phono jack on the side of the control pod with a music note on it. Once you've plugged your iPod in either way, hit the "effect" button until it says either Stereo x 2 or Dolby Pro Logic II Music. The former will make the same stuff that is playing out of the front speakers play out the rear, and PL2 Music is a matrix effect that will give you pseudo 5.1 from a stereo music source.

your best bet might be trough the ipod dock connector. the headphone port can only output stereo.

Dock connector is also only stereo, its just line-out level instead of through the iPod's headphone amp.

I don't think you are going to be able to do what you want, exactly how you want. The iPod is only capable of outputting stereo sound, so unless you either get a splitter for your headphone jack or switch to dual stereo (or whatever it's called) on the speakers themselves, you won't be able to get surroud. And even if you do what I offerered above, that will only be 4.1 stereo.
