surround sound system

ShadowBlade

Diamond Member
whats a good surround sound system that will sound as good or better than my sony 450W stereo (dont know specific specs on it, got it from a friend)

i was looking at these two Text 1 Text 2 but if you have something better for the same price, link to it or tell me which of those you'd choose

must be under $250 and from a retail store like best buy or circuit city

What are you hooking this up to ShadowBlade?

With a budget like $250, it's going to be pretty tough to get something decent in a receiver/sub/speaker combo.

You might be best off just getting a computer speaker solution.

So right now you have a 2.0 Sony set?

ill be using it for movies and games, and i use my sony 2.0 set as speakers for everything (computer, movies, games, cd's, etc)

i was planning on keeping my sony 2.0 system around for my computer and just using the surround sound for movies and games (console, not computer)

Ok, then you're probably best off with a lower end Onkyo set.

Something like this one (the radioshack version of the 570 set) would be a good bet. It has gotten a lot of good comments on AVSforum in the budget category.

I'm not sure how the 580s compare, but that would be another option for you.

Well, even if I don't have the right answer, I at least know where to point them for questions like these (away from Anandtech 😛).

ShadowBlade - If you want to put the effort into this, a really good thing to do is bring some music you know well and go into a store that carries some models in this pricerange and listen to them.

I don't think I'd accept it, I've only been into this sort of stuff for about 14 months and I'm still learning new stuff daily (well, whevener I decide to actually put any effort into reading stuff). There are plenty of members here that have been doing this sort of stuff for a decade+ and would find my current system quite lacking 😛... they don't seem to post much in these sort of threads though...

Good luck searching for something. Your own ears are the best guide for you. Get the best sounding system you can afford 😀. (If you go somewhere that has Logitech z-5500s, don't count them out yet. With two digital inputs and some ProLogic choices on the control pod, they would do a decent job at handling HT duty).
