I am setting up surround sound - nothing fancy - just some JBL bookshelfs and such. My question is - should the front and rear speakers be indentical or should the fronts be larger/smaller?

thanks.

in a perfect world front, left, center, left surround and right surround are identical.

but in all honesty placement is your biggest concern.

Matching front to rear is not as important as matching fronts to center. The sounds out of the rear speakers are normally very different than what comes out of the fronts. But the sounds out of the fronts is normally identical to those out of the center.

My fronts and my center were manufactured to match. My rears are totally different speakers.

So if I stay in the same speaker series and similar size between fronts and centers I should be ok

I would want the fronts matching each other, the rears matching each other. I don't care if the fronts and rears match each other. I have much more powerful fronts than I do rears. Remember how much sound comes out of each speaker. Get a good center and fronts. Rears are really just ambiance.

in theory, the same series should have similar components that matched for acoustics... so you should be fine. just double check the specs.

Fronts and center should be matched. Rears are less important but I would at least stick with the same brand but you could go with smaller bookshelfs if you want and it will still sound good.
