Surround sound questions

I bought a Sony STR-DE595 yesterday. I have it hooked up to my digital cable box via a digital coax cable (expensive sucker) and RCA cables. On the upper channels (speedvision HBO) I get a digital signal and Dolby Digital lights up. That is exactly what I want and it sounds wonderful.

Now move to yesterday. NASCAR (I know insert whatever redneck comment you like) on NBC. No good surround sound. I can switch to Dolby Pro Logic II. But it is not as good as true 5.1.

Is that the best I can get?

What is everyones experience or set ups? And does anyone know any good sites for home theater newbies?

Simulated surround (Dolby Pro Logic) is the best you're going to get on a station that doesn't broadcast DD5.1.
