Surround Sound Question regarding 7.1

I bought some spkrs on Black Friday
(4) R30's $37 each
(2) R15's $25 each
(1) CS1 center channel $99
Total cost was $297

I already have a 200Watt High Current Dual 10" Polk Audio Sub.
Now I have a 7.1 surround sound system up from a 5.1

I was using a 5.1 system connected to my HTPC with an HDA X-Mystique Sound Card with fiber optical cable, which gave me 5.1 sound in my games and my movies.

My question is, how do I enable the 7.1 feature in the HDA X-Mystique Sound Card?
Do I need to use analog to enable it?
There is Virtual 7.1 under settings... but I'm not sure if that is the correct setting. 😕

good question,

How did you enable 5.1😕

If we are talkign straight passthrough, then you shouldn't ahve to do anything but twll it that you have 7.1 plugged in

Well, for the 5.1 feature, there is a "Dolby Digital Live 5.1" that you can select under the digital settings, giving you true 5.1 surround in your games via EAX 2, and then for movies it just passes the signal untouched to the reciever.

However, for my 7.1 setup, there is no tab under the digital settings showing "Dolby Digital Live 7.1"

There is an "8 Channel" tab ... but that is under the analog setting... I'm assuming that is the only way to enable 7.1....

Can anyone confirm this for me?

doh....

good idea... I'll try that

You either gotta go analog or get the newer HDA card (not sure if its out yet) that does the DTS Live thing, that supports 7.1 AFAIK.

Hhmmmm.... interesting

So, here is what I did.
I left my soundcard on DDL 5.1
I put in Star Wars EPII and guess what!!! NO Dolby Digital EX 7.1, just plain ol' Dolby Digital 5.1, even though I selected the option in the dvd menu and I get absolutely no sound in the surround back rears.

I can manually switch to DD - EX 7.1, HOWEVER... the EX feature says "OFF" rather than on... and I hear sound in the rear during certain sequences... however my reciever says DD-EX is "OFF"

I then started up "Finding Nemo" my reciever automatically switched to DD - EX 7.1 saying "ON"
Samething with "The Incredibles"... automatically detected DD - EX 7.1 "ON"
Popped in "LOTR - III" and BAM! DTS-ES "ON" giving me 6.1 with discrete surround back channels working in MONO

All good... EXCEPT for the fact that "SW EPII - Attack of the Clones" DOES NOT switch to DD - EX :|

Oh well, I'm happy now.. got me some 7.1 goodness 🙂

upgrade, go to 9.1

lol... I can't imagine 9.1 being affordable for me.
My total setup ran about $1200

9.1 would mean chucking my reciever, since it can only decode up to 7.1 🙁
Also, I live in a duplex, so my system gets light use right now and suits me fine when the neighbors are gone 😛

D'oh!

i was trying to be funny, i didn't know 9.1 actually existed

let me try again

upgrade, go to 15.1
