Surround sound help please.

Ok so my wife got me this setup for Christmas but I'm having some problems.

Right now I have an optical cable plugged into my TV's optical out going to the optical in on the Blu Ray player. If I have it setup like this I don't get surround sound. In order to get surround sound I have to plug the optical cable into my PS3 or DVR box. Is this normal?

bluray player optical out --->>> optical input on the receiver/amp/whatever the hell the thing is.

looking at the back of that thing it already sends the discrete output from the bluray player to the speakers. So its a software menu item. The optical input on the bluray player is for an additional 5.1 audio source.

Ok that's what I figured. Anyone have any experience with optical splitters?

Basically I just need to hook up my PS3 and DirecTV receiver up to the optical in port on my BluRay/Surround Sound.

That won't condense two into one, it'll only split one into two so it won't work for you. You'll have to get a system selector thingy that has one optical output but many inputs that you can switch through.

Something like this

Well the first review on the link I posted above said he is using it backwards and seems to be working fine. I just wanted to see if anyone here has tried them.

Edit: Nevermind, I read the 3rd review and the guy said his DVR wouldn't block the signal so the sound was mixed or something. Damn.
