Suround sound and sound card question

so I bought this 5.1 souround sound but the center and the rear speakers dont work ? is a problem with my sound card connection or do I need a better sound card that handles 5.1 system. the sound card I HAVE RIGHT NOW IS
Intel(r) 82801AA/AB/BA/CAAC'97 Audio Controller
any advice will be appreciated

Are you listening to something that is multichannel (like a DVD or a game), or are you testing with something stereo (like music)?

Did you select 5.1 in your windows sound control?

I am amazed at the amount of people that think that stereo should magically play outta all the speakers when played on a 5.1 system....ugh

I should put it in my sig.

There are several questions about it every week.... and of course the people who aren't asking about it, but think there are problems with their 5.1 speakers because the "center and rears don't work" but they're testing with music.

Its does the same thing with dvds also, and I set the windows sound control to 5.1
