Surname "Singh"

So, how many of you guys have the surname "Singh" like me? I know it means "lion" in English. But does anyone know the history of the surname, and how it fits into the grand historical scheme of things?

I'm curious cuz alot of people I know have the last name "Singh" and I'm wondering if we're all related or something. 🙂
 
Uhh yeah and everyone with the last name 'Smith' are all related too.

Actually most people with names like "Farmer" "Smith" "Shoemaker" "Hunter" etc.. are all likely descendents of immigrants who were given surnames based on occupation. Other names, like "Jackson" "White" "Campbell" etc.. are ethnically diverse because many of these families had slaves back in the day who carried the family name.

In other countries the propagation of surnames is much more restricted to actual family, so it's quite possible that you could trace it back far enough and find a common root.

 
Singh is a common name among Sikhs.

But not all Singhs are Sikhs. Singh is also a common name among Hindus in parts of Northern India.

Cool! I'm a first-gen Canadian Singh who's Christian. Parents are from Guyana (South America), formerly known as British Guyana (it was one of the colonies). No one in the family knows what religion we were prior to Christianity though, or how many generations lived in Guyana prior to migration elsewhere.
 
I'm surprised you wouldn't know about the name. Many Indians at my area bear that name. It has to do with the Sikh religion. Their leader went by the name Singh, so the male followers all have at least their middle names--if not surnames--as Singh. The females go by Kaur. Sorry I'm not well informed as to the details of the sect, so I can't tell you exactly who the founder was and what his doctrines were.

The last name Singh was given to all Sikh males by the our 10th guru Gobind Singh mainly to symbolize the Sikh brotherhood and equality.

Are you Indian, Booster? :Q Or is that just a tease of the original poster? I saw that post where you were talking weird about your weight. You're like: I don't know even if I'm White . . . that's debatable (to paraphrase your statement). Somehow you connected that to your weight. LOL! (I'm sorry I'm depending upon my memory here. So I could have gotten things mixed up. I was confused for sure, though. 😛)
