Obesity rates have tripled over the past 40 years for children and teens from age 6 to 19, raising their risk of Type 2 diabetes and other diseases.
For the first time, children are being diagnosed with hypertension, Carmona said.
"Where will our soldiers and sailors and airmen come from," Carmona said. "Where will our policemen and firemen come from if the youngsters today are on a trajectory that says they will be obese, laden with cardiovascular disease, increased cancers and a host of other diseases when they reach adulthood."
Halting the rising obesity rates involves preparedness and prevention and should not be based on public policy, Carmona said.
Common sense can not be legislated, he said.
