"Obesity is the terror within. Unless we do something about it the magnitude of the dilemma will dwarf 9-11 or any other terrorist attempt," he said.

Obesity rates have tripled over the past 40 years for children and teens from age 6 to 19, raising their risk of Type 2 diabetes and other diseases.

For the first time, children are being diagnosed with hypertension, Carmona said.

"Where will our soldiers and sailors and airmen come from," Carmona said. "Where will our policemen and firemen come from if the youngsters today are on a trajectory that says they will be obese, laden with cardiovascular disease, increased cancers and a host of other diseases when they reach adulthood."

Halting the rising obesity rates involves preparedness and prevention and should not be based on public policy, Carmona said.

Common sense can not be legislated, he said.

Something like not smoking in public? 😀

Outlawing the use of partially hyrogenated and hydrogenated oils and fats would go a long way to helping this problem.

Sod it all.

If people don't want to change and they are paying their taxes let them eat as much crap as they want. It is their body. Who wants to FORCE them to eat stuff they don't like or to train?

So what if they die at 55-60 from being 50-90lbs overweight? They paid their taxes.

If the medical system in the USA were different, I would probably agree with you. However, as it is, everyone's costs rise because of the poor health of others.
