hey guys i just finished putting my system together and i dont know what kind of surge protector to get..is there anything special i need to look for or what?
I started to use an UPS (uninterrupted power supply). It's basically a power surge with a battery backup. You can get one starting at $30. I like it because I believe it stablizes the voltage more than just a surge supressor.
I agree with cy. I've been running an APC 500 ($40) for a couple years now with no problems. Last fall, when the hurricane hit, we were w/o power for 5 days. Fired up the generator, plugged in the UPS and the computer ran smooth as silk.

Back in the high flying IPO days I worked with some high-tech companies. The surge protectors - all you're buying is insurance (and for those who don't send in their little cards to register - aren't insured and the manufacturer is not charged). The resistor (I'm forgeting the technical terms I learned back then) in a surge protector is good for only ONE surge. Remember that thunderstorm last month - for all you know it "used up" the surge protector then. There is no way to put a diode or other means to indicate if the protector is still good. So, these things are basically useless.
