surge protector for cat5 and coax

I was at costco the other day and they had a super surge protector that had protection for cat5 and coax lines. First of all, is this really necessary? I'm in so. cali... if the weather plays a role at all.

Second, the surge protector I have at home only has coax. If I protect the coax line, which eventually goes to the cable modem (cable modem to router... etc)... will the cat 5 line be protected as a result? or will I need surge protection on the cat5 line IN ADDITION to the coax?

if you have cat5 outside the house then yeah, lightning can travel down it....some satellite systems get fried because the phone line carries the surge. I have heard of this but haven't witnessed it.

The coax across if outside the house....lightning hit my dad's friend's old school big dish and it toasted almost all the components the coax ran into.

If the cat5 is inside only you don't need surge protection for it.
