Surface Mount vs Internal Deadbolt

I need to install a deadbolt on to my door, and was wondering which I should get.

I know surface mount are significantly easier to install. All the guides I am reading keep saying that an internal deadbolt provides more security, but doesn't elaborate past that.

The way I see it is if I install the surface mount's latch with 3 inch bolts, it would be more secure than the internal, no?

Can someone who knows more about this subject care to enlighten me?

Well just think about it. It'd be much harder for the deadbolt to rip through the door or the doorframe (internal) than for it to just pull the screws/bolts out (external).

But, if the deadbolt isn't long enough, cant the doorframe be pried back, so the deadbolt just slips out?

I will be living somewhere where people will be dedicated to get in, but will stop when enough resistance is met. This will also be an internal solid door (so the frame isnt as bulky as an external, but the door is solid wood).

Fraternity house, where we will have lots of drunk people, who arent necessarily supposed to be snooping around.

Also, deadbolts are better, even in the situation I described?

Internal like a full mortise lock?

Internal is in the bolt comes out of the door, instead of out of something attached to the surface of the door.

not trying to be a douche or anything, but what about those metal doors that kinda look like jail cell doors?

just throw one of those outside the inner solid wood door?

Way too much hassle. I am gonna have insurance to cover my room, but I still want to have some reasonable amount of security. Also, the door opens in, so its not practical, even if it was a feasible idea.

What about what I said in my last post? Is a deadbolt still better in the situation I described? Can you get deadbolts with longer than an inch length?

Oh, got you now, yes what you call internal would be stronger. They have an extra long latch so installed the long wood screws that comes with it and you will be fine.

I don't really know which would be better in your specific situation, but i do know that a locksmith could probably help you out if you rang one up and asked if they could take a look at it.
