surface mount resistors

im replaceing a bad surface mount resistor. the number on it reads 287, which i think means its 280,000,000 ohms. i want to replace it with a normal resistor also.

i was looking thru mouser.com but there are tons of different manufacturers. can someone reccommend me a company that makes quality resistors?

am i reading it right? i know the color bands, but from a quick search online i came up with 280k.

edit: im fixing a rockford fosgate amplifier. a friend gave it to me. so far 3 resistors and a mosfet are fried. all about $5 worth of parts. I would say its worth it for an amp that used to cost over $500

280K is a fairly normal size, but as jagec said 280 M would be huge.
You can get any 280K at any electronics store(even rad shack if it's the only one you have). I've fixed an amp before aswell. A capacitor went taking a mosfet, 2 diodes, and 3 resistors with it. I replaced them all with Radio shack parts, because the shipping offset the cost in so few parts. The amp is still running in my wife's car, and sounds great. While you're poking around you might be able to find a schematic, and get a little morte power out of it aswell.
 
Hey, speaking of car amps, does anyone know where to find some schematics to build one? That is, one that doesn't require some $50 mosfets... I searched Google and haven't found anything too promising. I wonder if you could build one on a breadboard... hey, I can dream can't I?? 🙂
 
buying electronic components, google for these companies: Allied, Newark, NTE, Mouser, Arrow, Future, etc.... there is a bunch.
 
287 = 280Mohms

you sure its not 281? (=280 ohms)

The company doesnt really matter, its just a resistor. it's pretty hard to fvck up, so to speak..
 
its 287 for sure. theres another good one on the right channel of the board that i can read easily.

there are some normal resistors that have brown, black, silver, gold. that would be a 1Bohm? i was trying to test them with my dmm and i cant get a reading because it only goes to 20m

they look ok i just didnt know why i couldnt get a reading at first.

so far things are looking good. i have all the mosfets i need on order. i needed 4 in the power section and 3 in the left channel output section. and then the few resistors.

ill post back if i actually get this thing working.

while reading up on mosfets ( i had no idea what they did before i got into this), i found a simple schematic for an amp using one. here is the link.
