All I did was change the workgroup from "Nectarine Dr." to "Newnan" and Windows asked me to restart. Now it won't boot. "Last Known-Good Configuration" does not work either. It looks like I'm stuck in Safe Mode for now.

I refuse to re-install Windows again. What's the first step I should take to reverse-engineer and undo this problem?

Windows XP Professional

Can you expand on "now it won't boot"? How far does it get?, do you get any errors?, do you see anything in the event logs when you are in safe mode?, etc

After the WinXP splash screen, before the Welcome screen. The monitor goes into power-saving mode and the system will not respond.

Thanks. What should I look for?

I'll tell you what I see...

*checking

The last entry I see from about the time I tried to boot is:
The Microsoft IPv6 Developer Edition driver was started.

IPv6 is part of the Advanced Networking Pack from Windows Update.

It may have screwed itself up after encountering a MAC Address conflict on the local network (crossover cable).

I would start with the system log and see if there are any errors that might indicate why the machine hangs on boot.

I'm not sure what specifically to look for, but hopefully something will pop out. Since this happened after you changed the workgroup, maybe there will be some netlogon errors.

^edited with system log findings

I hope that WinXP will allow me to remove/reinstall the Advanced Networking Pack while Service Pack 2 Release Candidate 2 is installed. I think it was fully-integrated into the Service Pack.

Thanks for your help.

Monitor goes to power saving mode eh?

What do you get when you boot in safe mode with networking?
What do you get when you boot in VGA mode?
Start in safemode, run msconfig, hit the diagnostic button, ok then restart.
Does it boot?
Does it boot with the NIC unplugged?
