Supposed PS3 price drop

I'm debating on getting a PS3, mostly because it's a blu-ray player that doubles as a video game system. I saw the message that the PS3 slim is supposed to be coming out in early September, and that there was supposed to be a $100 price drop on the existing model.

Should I go for the $100 price drop or just wait for the slim? Is there any advantage to the big old clunky ones other than using Linux (which I won't be doing anyways)?

I'd wait for the Slim. It has a 120gb hard drive and 45nm processor. There's really no difference between it and the current larger ones.

The Slim is due out on September 1st.

Yeah, if you don't have a PS3 yet, wait for the Slim. Destructoid did a mini-review of it and said that it is dead silent. They couldn't even tell if it was on.

If you already have a PS3, no reason to upgrade as you're not gaining any new features outside of the size change and you are losing features if you have an older PS3 that supports BC.

Amazon and GameStop.com are taking pre-orders on the Slim at $299.

If you're like one member here and think the smaller, cooler, quieter Slim is "gimped" without Linux, you can get an old PS3 with less storage for $299 right now at Newegg.com, Amazon, SonyStyle.com, GameStop, etc.

If you can get a pre-order, I would jump on it. Amazon is warning of slim shortages and is limiting pre-orders to one per household.

I'd reckon that you can walk into any brick and mortar after the PS3 Slim is released and find shelves filled to the brim with PS3 Slims. This sounds just like a pressure sales tactic in order to get you to commit your money NOW, much in the same way that GameStop pressures people into pre-orders when you can walk into the local Wal Mart or Best Buy and find 50 copies of said "hard-to-find" game.

Even so, Amazon is tax-free for a lot of people, so you'd save another $25-30 if you order from them

Unless you take the Amazon Super Saver Shipping option (which can take up to two weeks to get to you), you're going to be paying for shipping...and for an item like a PS3 in a box, it's probably not cheap.

You pay for being impatient, whether it be tax or faster shipping. My advise is wait. Two weeks isn't going to kill you.

There are no deals yet beyond the $100 price drop.

The next time there is a 15% Dell coupon use that, or wait for SonyStyle.com to have another $100 off deal when you get their Sony/Chase visa.

That and Amazon's free shipping is actually pretty quick. Much faster than the advised two weeks. I usually get stuff in a week or less.

Yah, they're not bad. I usually get my stuff before their own ETA, unless it's backordered. I've never bought anything big from them though.
