Well, Im a few generations behind the rest of you guys, right now I have an 3200+ 64 (not X2) S939 I just ordered some DDR2 ram (prices are just too good to be true right now). I want to upgrade soon, and would really like to support AMD by getting a cheap 3600+ and an AM2 board.

My question is this, Will AMD's new architecture (Barsalona) work on AM2 boards? I remember something about AM2+ boards, or something to that effect. If no, then Intel makes an offer that I can't refuse, 113 for a Core 2 duo is such a good deal, it is unbelievable. So I jump ship? The fanboy in me says now, but the scrouge says yes.

Greetings,

I don't think it will be, but I am not fully up to date on the current or prev gen of CPUS and Thier mbs. Intel has not been very good about creating this possibility while AMD has.

However, I would not expect that the New AMD CPU will work on current boards as I believe there will be significant core changes, etc. Of course, AMD puts some of the bridge chips into the CPU so...

Regardless, someone more knowledgeable than I will be along soon so we will both learn something new very shortly.

Peace and Blessings

Buying the lowest-price (and presumably lowest-margin) parts is not a great way to push up a company's stock price. Of course, buying from their competitor would be worse... ;).

well, it would not be the lowest priced motherboard, I would get an decent motherboard. The AMD CPU would be strictly a buffer cpu, I would be willing to spend a bit more on the next generation of AMD CPU's, (well, it would be a speed boost compared to a 3200+) but thats assuming that the motherboard I buy would be compatible with it. On the other hand, I could get Intel's Core 2 Duo now and probably save a bit of money in the long run.

AM2+ K10 chips will work in AM2 boards, though you may need a BIOS update for them to work properly.

AM2 mobos should able to use AM2+ K10s, however you won't be able to take advantage of some of the new platform features like independent power planes (i.e. clock RAM completely independently of the CPU and OC cores to separate speeds).

aka1nas, what you say is not 100% correct. AM2+- en F+- mobo's do support the new functions, but mobo's with am2- and F- sockets will have to work with the 'usual' 128bits dualchannelcommunication. Notice the +- and the -
