Suppliment that promotes muscle gain and cutting?

My girlfriend doesn't want me to start taking creatine because she doesn't want me to look bulky. She would rather me look lean and fit ... and I agree.

I understand how creatine works, but will it make me look bloated and bulky? My arms do have some fat on them, so I don't want to end up with sausage arms. Is there a suppliment that will promote muscle gain without the bloating side effects?

Also, a side question to those knowledgeable: I want to burn calories and lose fat while building muscle. Is this counter productive? How should I adjust my caloric intake to get both results?

Edit: As a side note, my girlfriend is in Pharmacy school, so she is paranoid that most supplements do not undergo thorough and exhaustive testing before they are released to the public. Further, having worked with drugs extensively, she is not even convinced that an FDA approval means anything now days, which is true. So any supplement I suggest, she researches 😀

Edit: A supplement is called a supplement for a reason. It supplements a current regimen.
 
Building muscle while burning fat is possible. Easiest way to put it is to work out very hard and try to minimally cut back on intake, preferably cutting back on high-fat/high-calorie items. Reducing calories too much inhibits muscle growth and working out burns fat so don't cut back too much.

I talked to a personal trainer today, and he gave me a few standard/average responses.

It takes a 3500 calorie/wk decrease to burn 1 lb of fat.
It takes a 2800 calorie/wk increase to gain 1 lb muscle.

So it is a little mind boggling to think of the correct diet (not in the sense of food restriction, but just what I eat on a daily basis) for doing both at the same time.

I can understand the confusion because it's really not that simple.

The calorie decrease can come from working out while the calorie increase comes from burning all that fat off of your system.

The key to gaining muscle while losing fat is to lift weights at the highest level(to failure) and to keep your diet reasonable and not too restricted. Ignore the scale during times like this as you might gain a pound of muscle, lose a pound of fat, and think you haven't changed a thing. It's a cumulative thing and results are only seen over time and in the mirror. The scale is a very poor gauge of progress for anyone wanting to lose fat and gain muscle.

I've been working out for a few months, and have clearly seen some results. I was just wondering if there is an actual method to efficiently building/losing simultaneously. My weight has been fairly constant, but I am fairly certain that this is from losing fat and gaining muscle.

That said, do you know of any supplement that might help me without negatively impacting my fat burning? Whey maybe? Creatine derivatives? Muscle Milk? I honestly have no clue.

I've been lifting for over 25 years (yeah man, I'm old) and I don't have a clue about these modern supplements but I think old school is best on stuff like this... I'd say to eat more yogurt and low-fat cottage cheese and take a good multiple vitamin and mineral tablet (I like the one from Trader Joe's).

It sounds like you are already on the right track with your workout program. Working out is the most important part, the supplements are just that, an addition to your program. Many people, myself included, seriously doubt the worth of the latest supplements because I have seen all kinds of supplements with steroid-like effects advertised but the reality is that none of them work like steroids. And I seriously discourage steroid/hormone use... look at Anna Nicole using Human Growth Hormone before she died... the downside to using these things is too steep... at least for anyone that wants to be healthy.

 
Not everyone experiences bloating with creatine. I use plain old creatine monohydrate + dextrose and have never experienced any bloating. Theoretically the creatine is only supposed to cause intra-muscular water retention, not subcutaneous, which is what people are generally referring to when they talk about bloating. Having said that, there are still a number of people on the boards I frequent who complain about bloating while taking creatine. Your best bet would be to just try it and see.

Gaining muscle and losing fat at the same time is incredibly difficult for any experienced, drug-free person. Beginners can pull it off, but once you are 200+ lbs at a low bodyfat, you will find it much easier to focus on either building muscle (bulking) or losing fat (cutting). Unless you are a genetic freak, of course.

Finally, regular creatine has been researched to death. Just do a search on Pubmed. I have no idea about all the other types of creatine out there, however.
