I didn't join because I didn't want to be bothered with messages on my phone when I'm off the clock.

I think I'm the only one that declined to join.

What would you guys have done?

unless told to, i wouldn't either. I am guessing they already have texting and your phone number. They don't need anything else.

make sure they discuss private data on a non-secured channel because breaches of data protection are fun.

being isolated from your co-workers is only going to cause problems, i would go ahead and try it

if it gets to be a problem, you can always uninstall it later

I'd say I don't use proprietary software. Choose a freedom respecting program, and I may join.

Is it intended to be for work purposes?
Yes

But my feeling is I am not to be bothered during my off hours with work related matters.

Work related issues are to be relayed through internal email and the weekly meeting minutes. We even have group chat on work cell phones.

In emergencies, I can be contacted on my cell phone.

The group chat on the personal cell phones can kiss my ass

So just install it and then immediately turn off all notifications?

I think you're making a bigger deal of the 'off hours' thing than you need to. No one else likes to work off hours, so it probably won't come up much. Or as been suggested, you can turn off notifications when out of the office. In the mean time, you're missing out on important information that's only going to hurt you and your career.

We use slack and I have that installed on my personal phone. I didn't mind given that I have positive feelings towards my work and feel I am compensated enough to peak at the messages that occasionally come through after work hours. I would also get overtime or flex time if I have to spend any real time dealing with an issue\responding. Your situation and feelings may be different

There is also likely a social\networking\"team player" aspect that you give up by not doing it which may be useful in moving ahead in your company. For example I don't particularly want to spend $ on overpriced coffee shop coffee but I view it as a worthwhile trade for the chance to talk to certain people during the walk and feel that I have made connections that have improved my intra-company mobility

I'd address this directly with my supervisor if this happened. Seems like a really dumb move for a huge number of reasons. Your boss might not be aware of how bad the idea is.

So they have it on work cell phones? do you have a work cell phone and personal or just personal?

I think too many people are putting too much emphases and resilience on texting when calling is probably the better solution if it's important. If it's not, e-mail it.

I wouldn't do it simply because it involves installing whatsapp or however it's spelled. screw that garbage software. And as DigDog said, it isn't secure either. Granted, i'm not sure e-mail through exchange sync is either. It isn't like the old blackberry server.

I'm on call 24/7 now and i keep my e-mail and text alerts silent. Everyone has my on call number and personal cell number to reach me if it's important. (on call number forwards to my personal cell. no company phone for me) the problem i have with this is some people like calling for important issues and not leaving a message.... But the reason i have my alerts set to silent is we get too many junk messages through e-mail and txt. many come late at night when i'm trying to sleep. I'd bet that group chat thing will do something similar if who ever is in charge of the group doesn't squash it as soon as it starts. but chances are, it will be that person that starts it.

My employer would happily do this. Oh wait, they are already doing this by using Skype for business and my employer is the freaking telephone company.

Why buy into our phone service when we don't?

We have a work phone that uses a messaging app called mobile heartbeat. These do not come home and stay at work. We are not allowed to install mobile heartbeat on our personal phones.

So why bother with WhatsApp when we have mobile heartbeat other than to bother us off hours. No thanks...

What's the purpose of the whatsapp group then?

Is it to exchange witty office banter? In which case, doesn't matter if you don't join.

Is it to discuss work related matters during office hours? In which case, you have heartbeat as you said.

Is it to discuss work related matters after hours? If they are emergencies only, then I would join. If it is not emergencies, I would not join.

Unless I was informed in advance that it was happening, or some sort of explanation was given, I wouldn't join.
