I don't get it. So they get a laptop and load it up with a bunch of mp3's create a playlist, press play and wave your arms around. people think they are the greatest thing since the discovery of electricity.

Whats amazing is how much they make and how popular they are. All they do is play music on a laptop.

how are they considered great artists?

umm ... david guetta makes/produces music. you should probably do some research on this before you start making threads that show how much of an idiot you are.

Got a free Dave Guetta album recently. It's so bad I want to delete it from my iTunes purchases.

The act of dj'ing is distinct from the act of producing and Guetta happens to do both.

A lot of the other DJ's just press play though. Deadmau5 even wrote about it.

To ZeroCools point though the act of dj'ing these days does seem to be 99% track selection 1% fist bump

That's not what a DJ does. A DJ has to create a certain mix a certain way, you have too keep the energy up, be able to mix songs together correctly. A horrible DJ can easily kill the vibe at a party.

I still prefer the old school ones. I remember seeing guys like Kid Koala live and it was fucking incredible; pulling out actual vinyl and doing amazing things with it. Love that shit.

you dont get it, it's obvious.

being a good dj is about picking the right song at the right time.

being a good dj is about skill in using the equipment to mix properly.

thats IT. there is nothing else to it. being able to do these two things well is really, really difficult (source: i worked, lived with some amazing djs).

having your media on a usb stick is no different than having a bunch of technics bags filled with vinyl. give the same setup to two different people and they will give you two completely different results.

being a producer is even less work than that... look at oh, idk, madonna.

How to be superstar DJ:

1. Play an anthem
2. Speed it up a little
3. Shout out "put your mutherfukin hands up in the air" and clap 5 times
4. Jump 10 times with one hand touching the mixer
5. Repeat

Come on baby and drop it (OK)
Scrub the floor or just mop it (OK)
Show these gangsters how you pop lock it (OK)
Don't care what you got in your pocket (OK)
I get the way that you rockin'
Flip that thang thang don't stop it
Wanna just bang bang and pop it
While the club crowded just watch you (work it out)

Got a gang of cash and it's going all on the bar (now work it out)
And it's going fast cause I feel like a superstar (now work it out)
And you may not have it, I might have just broke the law (now work it out)
It's your turn to grab it, now make this whole thing yours (now work it out)

Yeah, that's the stuff!

I will say though that I have seen The Chemical Brothers and Daft Punk live, neither of whom use records and they were both incredibly entertaining.

This accurately conveys the current DJ scene.

:D

I think a lot of this also has to do with these guys, like DeadMauS, being the contemporary version of the old Vegas show--like those magicians and old retired comedians that should have quit decades ago.

Instead of the auditorium at whatever casino/hotel with the big live show, the massive clubs with big DJs in residence are the #1 attraction now. I think those top clubs pull in something like 1-2 million on a weekend, and they pay a premium to keep a "top DJ" as the name on the marquee.

A lot of these guys are similar record stores. Sure, it is craft to produce and DJ, but technology has changed just how easy it is. Pack it up.

As pointed out in the thread, a DJ incapable of having a good mix or reading the room's atmosphere to change what they are paying can easily kill a club / party. Good resident DJs in clubs are sought after. They keep people coming back.

Underworld - everything, everything (live) is also a great electronic performance. So sad I missed them when they came by LA.

most famous DJs also do producing and that's what they're famous for I guess.
Guetta still sucks even if you consider that but his songs are popular.

This is when it comes to the music itself: when it comes to the actual job of the DJ, choosing the right tracks and keeping the list fresh and mixing them is a skill and requires lots of listening and knowledge of the releases.
So there can be good and bad DJs. But pure DJs don't become as famous as Guetta anyway.
