SuperNova DLX 8" Touchscreen Color WiFi Tablet by Pandigital

So I was flipping through the channels on QVC of all things... and saw this tablet for 180 bucks.

I know this is a made in china tablet, but the specs seem pretty good! Or am I just suckered into this?

http://www.qvc.com/qic/qvcapp.aspx/v...sv.cm_scid.TSV

I was thinking this would be a good xmas gift for my mom, then I read the specs...

Model Number R80B455

Screen Size 8"
Panel Capacitive Touch Digital TFT LCD
Resolution 600 x 800 pixels
Internal Memory 4GB Shared Storage
512MB DRAM
Expandable Memory MicroSD Card Reader
up to 32GB
Processor Samsung S5PV210 Cortex 1.0 GHz
Proformance Processor with
dedicated GPU

Mini-USB 2.0 Host /OTG
Power Source Rechargeable Li-ion Battery
battery 3400mAh/3.7V
Virtual Keyboard
Orientation Sensor
Ambient Light Sensor
2 Axis Accelerometer
VGA Front Facing and
3.0 MP Rear Facing Cameras

Seems like it does more than the amazons fire. ? What would you get?

What I really liked was the 8" the screen makes a big difference I think it's perfect size ... tho the 600x800 sucks but... there are going to be a lot of downsides to any tablet for less than 200 bucks.

I guess I like that it had accelerometer and light sensors + 3MP camera. Seems like a pretty well built tablet. When they were going through the functions on the TV it looked smooth.

So, I was thinking heck maybe I should get one for my sister, I mom and me! One thing I did find interesting is that you got till Jan 31 to return it for a full refund if you don't like it.

Tell me why I shouldn't or should buy this. Anyone here got one?

Thanks!

The price is good, assuming its not a piece of junk. If it is junk then there is no price low enough.
I learned a while back a crappy tablet is NEVER worth your time or money. Either get quality or go without. But a cheap one just ruins the whole experience.

Also, I am at the point with Android that I dont even consider a device unless it has at least 8GB internal storage. Yes that limits my choices, but its also a good filter in a world with hundreds of devices. Pushing junk back and forth on a SD card is just too damn annoying. Thats one thing WP7 got right, you are required to have at least 8GB and many choose to have more, my cheap ass HD7 has 16.
Of course, none of them have SD slots yet so thats the downside.

Yeah I noticed this also... Dunno why they can't just put 16gig internal since...... memory is so cheap these days but what was really strange is the 512MB dram... Does that mean the dram is the system OS ram that gets loaded from the shared 4gb? Kinda like the cache ram? I thought maybe I should just get a 32GB SD? I heard that if it get's slow it's because the RAM is full (internal) so if you swap all the stuff over to the SD card, then it will speed up? Why not just have it all move over automatically? Like everything you d/l music and apps get pushed to the card so that the system never slows down? Kinda confusing a bit.

I hear you about crap. Esp, if the battery dies out fast or the tablet is just flaky. Hmmm, I maybe they kindle fire is the way to go. Even tho it's got less features.

Pandigital? Who are they? lol...

Wow, so many Android makers, that's the key to its success IMO (apart from it being a good OS).

No, RAM is RAM, random access memory. Same as a computer. Its the working space for everything your OS is doing at that exact time.
Internal storage is like the hard drive, actually, its more like a solid state drive, THAT YOU CAN NEVER UPGRADE! Ever. And it fills up fast, especially if you go nuts with apps. Especially if you go nuts with games. Some of them are getting up close to a gig nowadays.

And moving stuff to an SD card is a hassle. Some things refuse to transfer. Some dont work well after you transfer them. Would rather have more onboard storage.

That's junk. Get the Kindle Fire. That's what I gave as gifts to my clients and they all love it.

Yeah I'd say the Fire is probably the only acceptable low-cost tablet right now simply because they take a loss on them, and you are actually getting value than the money you lay out.

I signed up just to reply to this thread and defend the supernova.

I did a similar inecision dance about a month ago and went with the supernova instead of the kindle fire...i couldnt be happier with my decision. The supernova is a superb tablet for the tech savy with more capability if you know how to get it...

First of all a 4 gig internal memory is not at all limiting when coupled with a 32 gig micro sd card. The tablet reads the sd card as if it were an internal drive, you wont be switching out the stuff you want to access between the sd and inernal storage. Most of my apps and media are on my sd card in fact...

The bottom line is you should get the kindle fire if you want to watch tv, read ebooks, and look at pictures or listen to music and little else...

If you want to be or arr more tech savy and want to do all that and more get the supernova...it may not have as vividly colorful a display but it still plays hd video and works like a charm for everything else.

The Pandigital looks like a bad choice to me compared to the Kindle Fire or Nook Tablet for just $20 more.

First the processor is an old single core A9, while the Kindle Fire has a dual core A9.

Second the screen. The Kindle Fire has a 1024x600 IPS display. This is a lower DPI 800x600 and I'd be shocked if it was IPS quality.

Third the app market. None of these have Google Play (aka Market), but the Kindle Fire does have the Amazon Appstore which is now pretty large. So if you don't like to root, then this will be a problem.

Not sure where you got the intel but my supernova has a dual core 1 ghz processor...as for the display yes the fire is better but the fire has limited internal storage and no sd card slot...

True i dont have a good robust app market but ive been able to find most of what i want via direct download of the apk files...

Like i said, if youre more tech savvy you can get a lot out of the supernova...

I got the intel from the OP. His description says "Processor Samsung S5PV210 Cortex 1.0 GHz", my understanding is that's a single core processor. Pandigitals website seems to back up that spec.

Its a single core chip, its basically a Hummingbird. Same chip that powered the Galaxy S1s and the OG Galaxy Tab. Its about the fastest single core A8 chip out there, but its dated now.

The Fire is a better option, but if you want a 'standard' OS and more features, then the Galaxy Tab 2 7in or 7+ are worth looking into. The Tab 2 7" is 249 and the 7 Plus can be found for under 300 with some digging. They run the standard Android OS, which by itself gives them a substantial advantage over the Fire. Not to mention double the RAM, more internal storage, sd card slot, cameras, etc.

I have to admit if this deal had been going on when i got my supernova i might have gone that wy instead...especially with the $15 32gig microsd card...

Its smaller but has more internal memory and a better android verion...

that cpu is a cortex a8. and its running gingerbread for like $200ish.

just go to staples. they have the archos g9 80 "4GB" (i have one and it actually had 8gb). which is an 8" tablet, 1024x768, 512mb ram, with a dual core omap 4430 cortex a9 @ 1 ghz. with ICS already out for it.

$220 is the normal price.
