Hello everyone,

I am trying to build a new machine for my CG work, that needs a lot of cores, and ram
my idea is to start with one cpu and add another one later when I have money for it, here're the parts :

Supermicro X10DAX
xeon e5 v4 ( not sure which one yet ) depends on budget
Nvidiagtx 970
Crucial 64gb ddr4
Noctua NH-D14 ( from my current computer )
cooler master silent pro M 1000
Phanteks case

I have already two ssd's and HD so I won't buy new ones

What do you guys think about this build ?
My concern for now is where I can find the motherboard with the latest bios update, tried to email a bunch of companies on amazon, but they don't know for sure
also, the psu will work with the motherboard ?

What case do you guys recommend ? anybody knows if the phanteks will fit without drilling holes etc ... ?

thanks

No idea how to find out which suppliers ship with the latest firmware. I think you won't get around asking.

The PSU will work fine, but a 1000W PSU for that build seems to be a bit oversized. With 2 Xeons (TDP 140W each), the GTX970 (TDP 150W) and the rest, you shouldn't need more than 600W.
I'd go for a PSU with less power (say 650/750W to compensate for a second 970 or a high-end card) but a higher quality.
Take a look here: Power Supply Tier List for Tom's Hardware

The Phantec supports the E-ATX form factor of the board, so you won't have to drill holes. Clearance for the CPU cooler is there. So you're good to go.
For doing work, I would probably go for a case with noise-insulation (like Thermaltake Suppressor F51 or Nanoxia Deep Silence 5). But as you just want a mainstream graphics card and Xeons don't overclock, you should even be fine with your choice.

Thanks, I will check out those cases

I think that's all I need right ? for the thermal paste, which one is the best ?

Regarding which one is the best, take a look at German Tom's Hardware Guide's comparison.
In the end, choose one that the store you buy your other parts has to save on shipping. As you don't overclock (Xeon), it would make just a minor difference in any way.

If you have everything? Everything you need to build a computer, yes. At least when you finally decide which processor to use.
Do you need a DVD drive?

I just guess, that you have the periperals (monitor, mouse, keyboard).
If you use the PC for productive (commercial) work, I would also recommend a UPS system.

thanks that was helpful,

I have the rest of the items, I just found that I will need a noctua mounting kit for the 2011 socket, but that's all pretty much

going with the thermaltake you suggested, it looks good to me,

thanks for your help, layer8
