SUPERMICRO SC850 SERVER CASE ?

Junior Member
I have a chance to purchase this case for $125.00.It is a large server pedestal 15wx19hx22d has 11 fans 2 120mm & 8 90mm with 750w +350w redund. power supplies
will take up to a 13x16 motherboard.
Does anybody have this case and if so can you comment on the positives and negatives?

For the price it looks like a deal seeing how the case market is going high power and cpu's are getting more powerful.

thanks,
Gary

Well, if all the original equipment comes with it, that is quite a bargain. I hope it is local as the cost to ship that thing could equal the purchase price. Do you really need a SCSI server case like that or do you just want to take advantage of the fire-sale price? And always remember: If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Look down the page for the Rocketfish case thread. That's a big case that an individual might find useful.

And welcome to the AT forums.

My first response is that it looks rather dated. Second, do you have a need for such a beast?

I was using something with a similar design but not quite as large - Yeong Yang Server Cube. I liked the side-by-side concept, but it fell short when it came to cooling and the motherboard compartment did not provide sufficient clearance for the components I wanted to install (Arctic Cooling Accelro S1, 120mm tower-style HSF, etc).

I recently replaced it with a Cooler Master 690 and have no regrets. I appreciate having a tool-less chassis, the cooling performance is *much* better and the interior is plenty big enough to accommodate things like the S1.

Edit: Were you planning on using the stock power supplies? Will they even work for your intended purpose and provide the connections your require (24-pin ATX, 12VATX, SATA, PCI-E)? If not, does the chassis design even permit you to install a standard ATX power supply?

Case that big to me means, more then 1 way for me to run out of room. :T

If its local pickup, and you do have a need for something that big, id go for it. Otherwise, theres better ways to spend your 125 on a more, (compact?) solution

Who wants a "compact" solution. you have a mm case and I'm building a chiller that'll total out at roughly 18" cubed or more, e-peen FTW!
